Education and Career Advisor for ESOL

Conducts intake interviews and placement assessment with prospective learners in English for Speakers of Other Languages classes. Provides educational and career advising to enrolled ESOL students, helping them to identify and achieve academic and vocational goals and take the next steps toward further training, college or employment. Workswith each student and the instructor to develop an individual Education and Career Plan tailored to student’s goals and skills, including a timeline for achievement of each goal. Advisor also provides supportive counseling, problem solving and referral to help students resolve barriers to attendance and completion of the program. Works collaboratively with teaching staff, as well as with the local community colleges and One-Stop Career Centers. Must be available two-three evenings per week (some flexibility as to which evenings). This position is funded at 17 hours per week for 42 weeks at $20.50/hr. These hours include paid professional development time, plus pro-rated sick, holiday and vacation time. Possibility of additional hoursadministering assessments.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree and minimum 1 year experience in educational or employment counseling or teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.Must have proficiency in one of the following in addition to English: Spanish, Polish, Russian or Portuguese. .Strong interpersonal and group facilitation skills, written and oral communication. Ability to work collaboratively to plan and implement programs essential. Must be technology literate, including proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite. Travel in the employee’s car (with mileage expenses reimbursed) may be required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:Experience working with immigrant populations. Familiarity with area colleges, vocational schools, and human service resources.Experience designing and implementing career planning and job search programming. Certified or willing to certify to administer TABE-E writing Assessment and/or BEST+ Speaking/Listening Assessment; familiarity with DESE-funded ABE system.
