Meeting Agenda and Minutes
(Minutes are indented under each discussion topic.)
(1) Spring 2003 Gas-Lift Workshop
· How were the sessions?
· How were the panel discussions?
· How were the breakout sessions?
· How was the keynote address?
· What could be improved?
Summary of discussion:
· Had a good mix of participants --- Operating Companies, Service Companies, others.
· Had a good mix of young and old. Pre-workshop courses may have helped entice some younger staff to attend.
· Had good balance for both days, although some felt Tuesday was too long and Wednesday too short.
· Some felt that having breakout sessions in the evening is too late.
· We should have two full days (but not overly full) of gas-lift presentations, panel discussion, etc.
· We should find a way to work the breakout sessions into the daytime.
· We should continue to hold the Steering Committee dinner on the last night of the workshop. This is a good was to provide quick review of the event.
· It would be helpful to hold the Gas-Lift Workshop in close proximity to another major Petroleum event such as the ESP Workshop, OTC, SPE Annual Meeting, etc. This would help those who must travel a long distance to attend the workshop. This was discussed, but not resolved.
· Next time, it might be possible to have the workshop hosted by a University --- the University of Texas, Texas Tech, and the University of Tulsa were all mentioned.
· It would be good to have a session with input from the regulatory agencies such as MMS, etc.
(2) Pre-Workshop Courses
· Should we offer them at each gas-lift workshop?
· What topics should be offered?
· Who would be willing/available to teach?
· What could be improved?
Summary of discussion:
· The pre-workshop courses were well received.
· They should continue to be held.
· They should continue to be one day, even though some students would have liked two-day sessions to get into more detail on each topic.
· They should be held during the Fall 2003 overseas event. This may help to attract more young staff.
· The mix of courses was good.
· The pre-workshop course evaluations may provide insight on additional topics.
(3) Associated API and ISO Meetings
· Should we offer to hold them at each gas-lift workshop?
· How could they be improved?
Summary of discussion:
· The appropriate API and ISO gas-lift committee meetings should continue to be held in conjunction with the Gas-Lift Workshop.
· People from far away (e.g. overseas) need to have these meetings grouped together so they can justify making the trip.
(4) Associated VPC Meeting
· Should we offer to hold it at each gas-lift workshop?
Summary of discussion:
· The VPC meeting is only held once per year, so this isn't an issue for the Fall Gas-Lift Workshop.
· It was agreed that this meeting should not be held on the same day as the workshop and there should be no impression that it is part of the workshop.
· It was agreed to schedule this meeting on Thursday morning after the main workshop in 2004.
· The people who attend this meeting may need to miss a little of an API or ISO gas-lift committee meeting, but this is acceptable to everyone.
(5) Topics for Fall Gas-Lift Workshop in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
· Session topics?
· Breakout session topics?
· Other issues?
Summary of discussion:
· The following potential topics were discussed for the Fall Workshop:
- New Technology
- Field Reviews - always a favorite
- Field Examples
- Good Practices
- Dual Gas-Lift
- Intermittent Gas-Lift
- Gas Wells
· Concerning general chair for the workshop:
- Seis Hussain of ExxonMobil has already been asked to do this.
· Concerning a keynote speaker:
- Shell suggested the General Manager of Brunei Shell
- Others felt it would be good to ask a manager from Petronas and
perhaps find another important role for a manager from BSP
· Travel concerns:
- It may be difficult to obtain visas for going to Malaysia and surrounding
countries in the fall.
- If the US further tightens its visa requirements, other countries will likely
do the same in retaliation.
(6) Topics for future workshops
· Session topics?
· Breakout session topics?
· Potential keynote speakers?
Summary of discussion:
· Keynote speaker for 2004 Workshop.
- Have recently had several from Operating Companies.
- Had Brian Matusek from Schlumberger this year.
- Should have manager from Weatherford next year.
· General chair for 2004 Workshop.
- Jim Hall of Shell International volunteered to chair the 2004 workshop.
· Focus for 2004 Workshop.
- Have some Government input on regulations.
- Have some University input.
- Intermittent gas-lift.
- New technology.
- Field reviews.
(7) Administration of future workshops
· Who is willing to chair future workshops?
· Any concerns with ASME, organizers?
· Where should Spring 2004 Gas-Lift Workshop be held?
· Thinking ahead to 2005, Spring and Fall?
Summary of discussion:
· In general the hotel facilities and meals were excellent.
· ASME staff received "rave reviews" for their excellent handling of the workshop administration.
· The room layout was long and narrow. This made it very difficult for people in the back to see and hear. A wider, shallower room layout would be preferable.
· We should provide more guidelines for the PowerPoint presentations. Some were too dark and too small to be easily seen.
· Having a stand-alone workshop, in stead as part of the ETCE, is much preferred.
· We need to focus on encouraging more involvement from gas-lift Operators.
· We should be willing to move the meeting outside of Houston.
· We need to think "hemispherically." Locations mentioned included:
- New Orleans
- Mexico
- South America
