Alex Gartner is the Richard W. Wesp Assistant Director of the Cincinnati Children’s Choir (CCC), Ensemble-in-Residence at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). He regularly prepares his choirs for collaborations with the Cincinnati Symphony, the Cincinnati Pops, the Cincinnati May Festival, the CCM Opera Division and the CCM choirs and orchestras. His choirs have also performed both domestically and internationally, most recently at Carnegie Hall in New York City in March 2013 and in at the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing, China in July 2014. In July 2015, his choir will be featured at a mass at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City and will represent the USA at the World Expo in Milan.

Gartner is active in the field of sacred music, and was recently appointed as the Director of Traditional Music at Epiphany United Methodist Church, one of the largest Methodist churches in the Cincinnati area. Previously, he served as the Director of Music & Organist at St. James Episcopal Church in Westwood, where he was recognized for achievements in program leadership, pioneering partnerships with local community artists and organizations to make a high standard of music more accessible to the residents of Cincinnati’s west side.

An avid pianist and organist, Gartner has presented recitals and accompanied choirs across the Greater Cincinnati area, and is continually in demand for concerts, festivals, and reading sessions. In 2013, he made his accompanying debut on the Carnegie Hall stage in New York City.

Recognized for building healthy musical theatre singing in children and youth, Gartner has served as music director for numerous local theatre productions. He is the founding music director of the Commonwealth Artists Summer Theatre (C.A.S.T.), a summer theatre program for high school students in Fort Thomas, Kentucky, and is a frequent presenter and clinician at local musical theatre workshops.

Gartner is a founding member of the Greater Cincinnati Choral Consortium, serving as a board member since August 2014, and is the Artistic Director of the Forest-Aires Women’s Chorus. He earned his Bachelor of Music in Vocal Music Education from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and is a recipient of CCM’s John Leman Award for Outstanding Musical Leadership.

Gartner is a member of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA), the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), the American Guild of Organists, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
