GARAGE SHOP SUPERVISOR

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Supervises and inspects the maintenance and repair of automotive, mechanical and hydraulic equipment; does related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is technical supervisory work involving responsibility for maintenance and repair of all city-owned motor driven equipment. The work is performed under general supervision in accordance with established objectives and policies requiring the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out the technical details of the work. General instructions are received outlining the routine activities and detailed instructions are received on new or unusual assignments. Supervision is exercised over the activities of subordinate mechanics, equipment operators and other workers.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative only)

Inspects a variety of automotive, mechanical and hydraulic equipment for worn, damaged or defective parts or mechanisms by visual inspections, road tests and use of testing devices and prescribes needed repairs;

Inspects and certifies vehicles as roadworthy in accordance with New York State requirements;

Supervises and keeps appropriate records for required New York State Motor Vehicles and Inspections;

Plans, supervises and inspects the maintenance and repair of light and heavy trucks, tractors, automobiles, graders, sweepers, rollers and other equipment;

Supervises making repairs and in rebuilding and adjusting engines and sub-assemblies;

Supervises the more difficult trouble shooting adjustment, tune-up, repair and rebuilding jobs;

Instructs subordinates in the proper methods of repairing and adjusting engines and sub-assemblies;

Instructs subordinates in Federal, State and Department of Public Works and/or City safety regulations and ensures compliance with them;

Supervises the operation of machine shop equipment including lathes, grinders, drill presses and other metal working machines to make, rebuild or repair parts;

Leads in converting standard automotive equipment for special purposes;

Assists in drafting specifications for the purchase of automotive and construction equipment and supplies;

Prepares and submits activity, cost and time records and reports;

Performs a wide variety of related duties in connection with the management of the public works garage;

Supervises maintenance of garage facility.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of the standard practices, terminology, safety precautions and tools used in the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment; good knowledge of the geography of the city; demonstrated ability to diagnose need for and to make repairs on a variety of automotive equipment; ability to plan and supervise the work of mechanics; ability to work from plans, specifications, rough sketches and to understand and carry out oral and written directions; ability to get along well with and secure the cooperation of others; ability to keep records and make reports; good hand and eye coordination; good judgment; initiative and resourcefulness; reliability; thoroughness; good physical condition.

ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Five years of satisfactory experience as a skilled automotive mechanic in a garage or repair shop.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Employee must obtain and keep an up to date New York State Department of Motor Vehicles inspector’s certification as issued by the appropriate New York State authorities.
