Bobby Franklin and the loneliness of a political purist

A private burial for Franklin, a 14-year veteran of the state Capitol, was held Friday. A public memorial service

will be held Monday morning in Cumming.

So far as we know, the 56-year-old, divorced Republican from Marietta went to bed on a Friday, after complaining of chest pains. No one came looking for him until Tuesday morning.

Bobby Franklin had become something of a recluse recently. He’d lost his bookkeeping job last year, and

was living on a skeletal legislator’s salary.

Gartland and his wife adopted him. “I just appreciated someone taking a stand and not waiting to stick his finger up in the air,” Gartland said.

Franklin was in good spirits that last Friday. He’d landed some work. And he had been given a look at a new map of his House district. House Republican leaders, he feared, would punish him by filling his district with new and unfamiliar voters.

“Friday, when he called me, he said they didn’t do much to his district. So he was happy. He was flying high,” Gartland said. Thus, Franklin went to bed happy.

Four days later, when police arrived, they would find the state flag that he inspired and voted against hanging from his front porch."

The Georgia General Assembly’s perhaps most controversial member, Rep. Bobby Franklin, was found dead in his home Tuesday morning.

Early indications are he died of natural causes.

Franklin, R-Marietta, was found dead in his bed by Cobb County police who were called by his longtime friend and church member,

Pat Gartland, who said Franklin had complained of chest pains last week.

Police ruled out foul play early and were awaiting more information from the medical examiner.

State Rep. Bobby Franklin found dead

Cobb County police just confirmed that state Rep. Bobby Franklin, a Cobb County Republican who skirted the outer reaches

of conservatism and helped design the current state flag, has been found dead at his home.

“Our investigators are out there now, at the residence,” said police spokesman Mike Bowman. He promised more details later this afternoon.

From my AJC colleague Chris Joyner:

According to Cobb County sources, a family friend came to check on Franklin this morning after he didn’t show up

for church Sunday. The friend saw Franklin’s truck in the driveway and, peeking through the window, saw his computer was on and called the police.

Franklin had complained of chest pains Friday and planned to seek the advice of a family friend who is a nurse.

Police found Franklin in his bed, dead.

Profiles In Constitutional Courage: Rep. Bobby Franklin Of Georgia

[ excerpt ]

Among the legislation introduced by Bobby has been legislation:

– To outlaw all abortions (HB 1.) This strong pro-life effort on Bobby’s part has predictably caused him to be viciously

attacked and lied about. Because he believes all abortions are murder, Bobby rejects any efforts to simply regulate abortion (sonograms, parental consent) because after such regulations are obeyed, the unborn baby may still be killed.

– To make to make gold and silver the only legal tender for payment of debts by and to the state of Georgia pursuant to Article I Section 10 of the U.S. Constitution (HB 3.)

– To tax the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta as it would any other privately owned bank in the state of Georgia (HB 466.)

– To allow anyone, without a permit, to use their private residential property for the growing or raising of food crops or chickens, rabbits, or milk goats in home gardens, coops, or pens on private residential property so long as such food crops or animals or the products thereof are used for human consumption (HB 2.)

– To remove the Governor’s right to temporarily suspend or regulate the sale of guns during an emergency (HB 6.)

– To prevent local governments from adopting regulations or banning the sale of unprocessed agricultural products from the farmer to the consumer (HB 12.)

– To eliminate the income tax throughout the state and by any local governments in the state (HB 13.)

Sponsored by Representative Franklin and dropped in the House Hopper on January 24, 2011, House Bill 3,

the "Constitutional Tender Act", aims to make gold and silver the only legal tender for payment of debts

by and to the state of Georgia pursuant to Article I Section 10 of the U.S. Constitution. Franklin maintains that

all fifty U.S. states are in violation of this Constitutional stipulation to not "make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts," as paper and electronic bank notes (Federal Reserve Accounting Unit Dollars) are used nearly exclusively as tender. On February 17, 2009, Representative Franklin introduced House Bill 466 that would tax the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta as it would any other privately owned bank in the state of Georgia.
