D and T

Design and Technology prepares children to take part in the development of tomorrow’s rapidly changing world. Creative thinking encourages children to make positive changes to their quality of life. The subject encourages children to become creative problem-solvers, both as individuals and as part of a team. It enables them to identify needs and opportunities and to respond by developing ideas and eventually making products and systems. Through the study of design and technology they combine practical skills with an understanding of aesthetic, social and environmental issue, as well as functions and industrial practices. This allows them to reflect on and evaluate present and past design and technology, its uses and its impacts. Design and Technology helps all children to become discriminating and informed consumers and potential innovators.

Fundamental Great British Values

At King Edward Primary School we understand clearly our responsibility in preparing children for their next stage of education and for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life. We lay the foundations so that the children can take their place successfully in modern British society by promoting the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. Here at King Edward we believe that everyone can achieve, we use the mantra of ‘I can, You can, We can’ to inspire the children and staff. Planning

At King Edward Primary School Design and Technology is taught as part of a two year revolving programme withfour ten week themes each school year. The curriculum is carefully planned to ensure there is appropriate coverage and development of skills across the year groups. The long and medium plans map out the objectives to be covered in each theme. Teachers use these to plan weekly t meet the needs of the children.

Assessment

After each Design and Technology unit the children are assessed as working below the expected standard (WTS), working at the standard (EXP) or working above the standard (GDS).

At the end of the school year the children are assessed as working either below the expected standard (WTS), working at the standard (EXP) or working above the standard (GDS). This is reported to the parents as part of the end of school reports.

Collecting Evidence

Children take part in celebration events and assemblies to share, inspire and demonstrate the rich knowledge and skills acquired over the topics. These could be a showcase presented to parents, or sharing their work to other year groups in school or in assemblies.

Photos are taken of the work in progress and the finished product and are put in a D and T portfolio.

Displays of D and T are often displayed around school.

Enrichment Activities

  • Year 5 and 6 have the opportunity to attend an after school Cookery club.
  • Year 5 Lego workshop visitor.
  • Warburton’s visited Year 2 to speak to them about the process of making bread.
  • Creative days every term in Foundation stage.

Introduce more Cooking and nutrition opportunities.

Develop Design and Technology vocabulary within lessons.
