FUN HOUSE NURSERY

PARENT HANDBOOK

Dear Parent/carer,

Thank you for considering Fun House Nursery to provide you with your childcare.

At Fun House our aim is to provide the children with a warm, caring and safe environment in which they can gain a new experience through playing with other children and adults alike. We like to think that at Fun House we can gain as much from the children as they can from us.

Our staff team are all qualified in childcare and any new members of staff undergo training while at the nursery. Further training is made available to all staff to ensure that they are kept up to date with all new legislations. It is compulsory that all our staff are either first aid trained or willing to complete a first aid course when joining the nursery. We undertake Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) checks on all staff and volunteers for the safety of both the staff and the children.

I have split the handbook up in to different sections:-

  • Section 1 - Mission Statement
  • Section 2 – Registration Forms
  • Section 3 – Cost of Childcare
  • Section 4 – Our Policies
  • Section 5 – Concerns and complaints
  • Section 6 – Questionnaire.

if you have any further questions or queries then please do not hesitate to contact us on 01256 471066.

Yours faithfully

All at the Fun House

SECTION 4 – OUR POLICIES

It is important that all parents/carers familiarise themselves with our policies so they understand how our club runs. In this next section I have outlined some of the policies. A full copy of our policies is available on the parents/carers board.

INVOLVING AND CONSULTING CHILDREN.

Our nursery, and all its members of staff, are committed to the principle of involving and consulting children whenever decisions are made within the nursery that affect them.

The nursery believes that actively promoting the participation of children in decision making processes is beneficial to children, staff and the nursery as a whole.

The nursery’s commitment to involving and consulting young children stems from the ‘listening to children’ provisions set out in articles 12 and 13 of the united nations convention on the rights of the child. These state that:

  • A child’s opinion should be taken in to account in anything that affects them.
  • Children should have information disseminated in a way that enables them to make choices and decisions.

For children involvement and consultation helps them to develop new skills such as negotiating, sharing and understanding the perspectives of others. It helps them to understand how decisions are made and recognises that their opinions are important.

For both staff and the nursery there are multiple benefits of this approach such as improved behaviour, a relationship with children based on partnership, a more cohesive environment and activities and decisions that children feel a sense of ownership over.

The manager and staff will work with children to draw up the plans of activities, rules and the responsibilities involved within the running of the nursery in respect of consultation and involvement. Parental involvement will also be encouraged.

All children will be listened to and consulted actively this will take place in a number of ways including:

  • Listening to what they say in speech and other forms of communication.
  • Observing body language.
  • Drama and role play.
  • Through play and creative expression and the use of visual aids.
  • Via regular group based discussion and Q and A sessions.
  • Questionnaires and other regular feedback on activities.
  • Notice boards that carry important information about activities at the nursery.
  • Regular children’s meetings between children and staff discussing the clubs activities and any other relevant topics.

Age maturity and the type of decision being made will determine the extent and nature of the children’s involvement. However the emphasis should also be strongly in favour of involving children.

Consultation and involvement will be regularly monitored and acted upon so that children are able to see that their input has led to visible outcomes. The nursery and its staff will also be clear about what decisions children will be involved in and attempt to offer clear explanations if and when consultation and involvement is deemed inappropriate.

ADMISSIONS POLICY.

Our Nursery admits children in accordance with its Equal opportunities policy.

The following points will still apply: -

  • Children will be admitted on a first come first served basis. With priority being given to those who wish to use the nursery a full time basis and with other children already attending the nursery.
  • Availability of spaces on specific days cannot be guaranteed.
  • Special needs will be catered for provided funding is available for those needing one to one supervision.
  • Before joining the club both parents/carers and children will be invited to visit.
  • When joining the club children will be assigned to a member of staff for their first session to help them with settling in. (please see settling in policy)

If requests for admission exceed the number of places available you will be placed on a waiting list. During your time on the waiting list you will be contacted from time to time to make sure you still require your place at the nursery and to give you some indication on when the place will become available. If during the period of being on the waiting list you find alternative childcare arrangements and no longer require the place it is essential to the efficient running of the nursery that you make us aware of your change in circumstances so other parents/carers can be notified of the space becoming available.

Once the Nursery is aware that a place is going to become available. The parents/carers at the top of the list with a child at the correct age for the availability will be contacted and offered the place. Once the space is offered the parent/carer would be expected to pay a deposit of one months fees to secure the booking, if the booking is not secured within 14 days of the offer it will be offered to the next parent/carer on the waiting list.

Termination of registration.

This may occur when:-

  • The child has reached the age limit.
  • Failure to register for 5 days without prior notice.
  • Parents/carers wishing to terminate their contract must give 1 months notice in writing to the nursery manager

BEHAVIOUR AND RESPONSIBILITY POLICY AND PROCEDURE.

Acceptable standards of behaviour, work and respect depend upon the example of us all. Everyone within the nursery has positive contributions to make. Good behaviour has to be worked at, it does not simply happen. All involved must have high expectations, set good standards and apply rules firmly, fairly and consistently.

Positive behaviour is essential to the smooth running of the nursery and to the development of good work habits, it helps to set high expectations and high standards of work.

Our aim for this policy is to keep the children safe, happy and secure by:-

  • Ensure that a common approach to positive discipline and behaviour is understood and practiced by the whole nursery.
  • Provide a pleasant, safe, welcoming environment in which all members of the nursery may work and play.
  • Provide a framework within which children’s moral, spiritual and social development may be enhanced by experience and example.
  • Provide agreed codes of behaviour that are straight forward and easy to follow.
  • Outline clearly and concisely standards of behaviour which all the nursery including the children and parents/carers agree to be acceptable.
  • Provide guidance on certain daily routines which affect the nursery.
  • Provide an environment that is free from bullying of any form (see bullying policy).

Our nursery motto is courtesy and the nursery has a code of behaviour.

CODE OF BEHAVIOUR.

Everyone involved with the nursery should try at all times to: -

  • Treat each other and staff with respect.
  • Be considerate towards others.
  • Respect the property of others and the nurseries with respect.
  • Tackle challenges with determination and enthusiasm and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Listen to others and be encouraged to take it in turns and share in all activities

Everyone is of equal importance and all should be encouraged to take pride in their work.

For the safety of your child we have a few simple rules, and these will be discussed with the children from time to time. We appreciate that children will need to be reminded of the code of behaviour, their responsibilities and the nursery’s rules. Set out below are some of the basic rules.

  • No leaving the room without asking a member of staff.
  • No talking to strangers.
  • No bullying or rudeness to each other.
  • To think of others
  • No fighting or playfighting.
  • Children should help to clear up at the end of each activity.
  • Only soft balls to be used indoors.
  • Children must be accompanied to the toilet

We hope that, in most cases, the relevant member of staff can deal with the behaviour problems instantly on the first two occasions. If there should be a third time then the supervisor will deal with the child. In the unlikely event of a fourth occurrence of the same or similar problem, the child’s parents will be informed of their behaviour.

BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT POLICY.

We believe that children and adults flourish best in an ordered environment in which everyone knows what is expected of them and children are free to develop their plan and learning without fear of being hurt or hindered by anyone else. We aim to work towards a situation in which children can develop self-discipline and self-esteem in an atmosphere of mutual respect and encouragement.

In order to achieve this: -

1. Rules governing and the conduct of6. In cases of serious misbehaviour, such as
