Installing Dial-Up Networking on Windows 98
From your desktop click Start, Settings, and Control Panel.
Double click Add/Remove Programs
Click the Windows Setup Tab. Highlight Communication then click on details below.
Check the Dial-Up Networking box and click OK, now click OK again.
Windows will now copy files needed to enable Dial-Up Networking and you will be prompted to restart Windows.
NB: You may be asked to insert your Windows 98 CD in your CD-Rom Drive if the files cannot be located on your hard disk drive.
Now that your Dial-Up Networking is enabled you will now be required to setup your dial-up connection to iconnection.
Setting Up Your Dial-Up Connection
NB: The following procedure assumes that you have correctly configured and installed your modem device. If not, then do so now before proceeding.
§ From your desktop, double click My Computer, and then double click Dial-Up Networking.
§ Double click Make New Connection.
§ You will be prompted to supply a name for your connect e.g. iconnection.
§ Click next and type the telephone number 0860007249
§ Leave area code blank
§ Be sure you select Country code as South Africa 27
§ Click next, and then click finish.
Configuring Your Dial-Up Connection
NB: Your Dial-Up Networking Dialogue should now also display your connection icon called I-Connection.
You will now configure your dial-up connection properties
§ Select your I-Connection icon and with the right mouse button click and select Properties.
Uncheck Use Area Code And Dialing Properties
§ Now click Server Types Tab
§ Verify that Type of Dial-Up Server is PPP Internet Windows 98.
§ Verify in the Advanced Options that:
o Logon to network is checked
o Enable software compression is checked
o
§ Verify in Allowed network protocols that
o NetBEUI is unchecked
o IPX/SPX Compatible is unchecked
o TCP/IP is checked
§ Now click TCP/IP Settings and verify that:
o Server assigned IP address is selected
o Server assigned name server addresses is selected
o Use IP header compression is checked
o Use default gateway on remote network is checked
o Now click OK and OK.
§ You are now ready to connect to iconnection.
§ On your iconnection icon, right click and select create desktop icon and click OK.
§ Your connection will now be displayed on your desktop for easy access.
Connecting to iconnection for the first time
§ Double click your connection icon on your desktop
§ Fill in your username and password supplied by iconnection
§ Check the Save password box and verify your phone number is correct.
§ Now click connect
§ A status window will appear, that indicate your dialing status,
§ Once you are connected a tray icon will appear at the bottom right of your screen in the Windows status bar.
