From the school nurse, Gail Sullivan

Welcome back!

Your child’s good health is basic to a sound education and productive living. The purpose of our school health program is to maintain, improve and promote the health of your school age child.

Ways to promote a healthy environment for students and staff include keeping your child home if an elevated temperature is present. His or her temperature should be normal for 24 hours prior to sending them back to school. Students should not return to school for 24 hours after vomiting or diarrhea stops.

Please notify us if your child has an infectious disease or condition such as strep throat, pink eye, lice, ringworm, etc.

If your child becomes ill or injured enough to go home during the school day, you will be notified so arrangements can be made to take him/her home. Please keep emergency cards up to date.

As the cold weather approaches, children should be dressed appropriately.

Also, it is important that your child eat a nutritious breakfast each day before coming to school.

It remains to be seen how the flu and cold season will affect us this year. Please stress to your child the importance of rest, nutrition and above all precautions which include frequent hand washing and covering ones mouth when coughing or sneezing. If you suspect your child has the flu, please let me know.

Donations-I am in need of a few items for the health room. Nut free snacks and saltines are always in need. I also need cough drops for minor colds and sore throats. Also, if you have any gently used sweatpants or elastic waist pants, especially in smaller sizes, I would be very grateful!

Sixth grade parents-you should have scheduled your child’s physical for entry into seventh grade by now. The physical should be completed during the sixth grade year. If you have not, time is running out! It often takes months to get an appointment for a physical exam. Please do so immediately so that you can turn in the blue form to me by June 1, 2014. Remember, your child will not be allowed to enter Silas Deane Middle School without the blue form completed and your child’s immunizations up to date. Thank you to those of you who have already done this

Book Fair Update

Our Scholastic Book Fair was a great success and I would like to thank the volunteers and parents who supported the Fair. Through our generous parents, our teachers were gifted 97 books for their classrooms!! We look forward to seeing you at the Spring BOGO Fair! Thank you, Shannon Jones.

Important Information Regarding Student Attendance

A letter was sent home with students on September 20th containing important information regarding student attendance. Please be sure you read that letter. According to state statute:

  • Parents are required to call the school to report the first 9 absences or send in written documentation
  • For the tenth absence for illness and beyond, a doctor’s note is required for the absence to qualify as unexcused.
  • Unexcused absences contribute to the state’s definition of truancy. A student is considered truant after 4 unexcused absences in a month or 10 unexcused absences in a year. Once a student is identified as truant, parents will be asked to come to school for a meeting to discuss a plan to improve attendance.
  • Students are considered “habitually truant” when the number of unexcused absences reaches 20 in one year. At that point the school is to contact the Connecticut Department of Children and Families (DCF).

New Procedure for Students who are TARDY!!

If your child is tardy to school, we are asking that a parent or guardian walk that child in to school and sign them in. Thanks!

Jog-A-Thon

Hanmer’s 8th annual Jog-A-Thon will be on Friday, October 11th (rain date: Thursday, Oct. 17th). Every class will have the opportunity to run, jog, or walk outside for 25-30 minutes. This event is a great way for our school to promote health and wellness through physical activity, and it is also a valuable fundraiser. Students who have money to donate should bring it to the office as soon as possible. Please make sure that the students’ and the teachers’ names are on the envelope. All checks should be made payable to the Hanmer PTO. If you have any questions about the event, please contact Mr. Diaz. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Mr. Diaz or the PTO event coordinators: Kristine Lisella at 860-604-1723 and Deb O’Leary at 860-257-3039. We are all looking forward to a fun and exciting day!

The Town-Wide Cross Country Run, sponsored by the Wethersfield elementary Physical Education teachers, will be held on Thursday, October 3rd, at Wethersfield High School. Students in grades 4 through 6 will have the opportunity to run the one-mile course at the high school. This event is a developmentally appropriate activity that reinforces much of the students’ current learning in physical education. Please encourage your child to be a part of this fun afternoon.

Students who are interested in running need to fill out and return their permission slips to Mr. Diaz by the day of the event. Transportation to and from the high school is the responsibility of the parent or guardian. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Diaz.

It’s Happening Again…FLAMINGOS ARE SHOWING UP AROUND TOWN

To help raise money to support the WHS Safe Graduation event, please consider having a “flock” of beautiful flamingos sent to your friends, family or neighbor’s home. The “flocked” family simply makes a donation of $20 to have the flamingos fly away or $25 to have them fly to someone else’s home you wish to pass them onto. As lovely as they are, the “flock” doesn’t hang around for more than 24 hours before they move on to the next home. These seasonal appearances are very popular so call now to get your “flockee” on the list. For more information or to place an order, please contact Nancy Jones, (860)257-8638, (860)306-3073 or lifeisjones@aol.com to sign up!
