One-day retreat planned for Northeast Convocation priests on Feb. 8

All priests of the Northeast Convocation are invited to a one-day retreat on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at the Sanctuary of Hope Prayer and Retreat Center, 2601 Ridge Avenue in Kansas City, Kan. (Take I-70 East to 18th Street northbound, then turn left on Ridge Avenue.)

Participants should plan to arrive at 9 a.m. for coffee and social time, and the retreat will start at 9:30 a.m. There will be a break for lunch at noon, and the retreat will continue until dismissal at 2:30 p.m. The cost of lunch is $10 per person.

This is an opportunity to build collegiality and decompress from the stresses of ministry. The retreat is being facilitated by Denise Simeone, Director of Mission and Program Development for the National Catholic Reporter and an experienced group facilitator. Contributions to an honorarium for her are welcome.

Evangelism workshops in West Missouri are open to all

The Episcopal Diocese of West Missouri has extended an invitation to members of this diocese to attend one of their upcoming workshops on evangelism:

  • Saturday, Feb. 18 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral, 415 W 13th St. in Kansas City, Mo.
  • Sunday, Feb. 19 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at St. James’ Episcopal Church, 2645 E Southern Hills Blvd, Springfield, Mo.

The deadline to register is Wednesday, Feb. 15, but spaces are filling up fast. There is no charge to attend.

Presenters will be the Rev. Stephanie Spellers, the Presiding Bishop’s Canon for Evangelism, and Evangelist Carrie Boren Headington from the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas.

These workshops precede a visit to West Missouri in May by Presiding Bishop Michael Curry for revival events on May 6 at the Kansas City Power and Light Stage from noon to 3 p.m., and on May 7 at Hammons Field in Springfield from 1 to 4 p.m.

Newton church offers Lenten prayer and icon retreat

All members of the diocese are invited to participate in a time of prayer, reflection and the creative process of writing an icon for personal devotion, offered by St Matthew’s, Newton. No prior art experience is required.

The three-day event is scheduled for Thursday, March 23 from 6 to 9 p.m.; Friday, March 24 from 6 to 9 p.m.; and Saturday, March 25 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The instructor will be the Rev. Les Jackson, St. Matthew’s rector, who has studied iconography and has led several retreats on the subject.

The cost is $75, which covers the cost of all materials. The deadline to register is March 10. Send a check for $75, payable to St. Matthew’s with “Lenten Retreat” in the memo line, to the church, 2001 Windsor Dr., Newton, KS 67114.

Workshop offered on building resilience to negative drama

Leading Out of Drama is a signature leadership training program for developing resilience to negative conflict drama and leading others with compassionate accountability.

It will take place on Saturday, Feb. 25 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Upton Hall Conference Center in Topeka.

Leadership and conflict examples will be designed for those who work with children and youth in the diocese, but anyone is welcome to attend.

The fee is $30, which includes assessment, workbook and lunch (pre-work is required). Registration is required by Feb. 17.

Reminder - parochial reports are due March 1

Clergy and wardens are reminded that their church’s annualParochial Report must be completed and returned to the diocesan office no later thanMarch 1. Paper copies of the report were sent to all churches of the diocese in early January.

Youth news

> Miqra registrations are still accepted. MIQRA (meek-rah) is a weekend retreat that focuses on the Bible and allows teens to discover what's in it, why we should care and how to read it. This year's educational focus will be on the History, Poetry, Wisdom and Prophets.

  • When: Saturday, Feb. 18, 1 p.m. to Monday, Feb. 20, 10:30 a.m. (This is President’s Day weekend, early check-out is available)

  • What: Time to learn and practice worship songs for youth events
  • Who: High School students who are interested in playing at youth events (Junior High students with permission)

    For those able to stay for Miqra, we will be providing all the music for the 8:45 a.m.Sunday worship service.

> EYE applications are now available. EYE is the Episcopal Youth Event and is the single greatest event the Episcopal Church does. It is about 1,000 people (high school students, their adult mentors and bishops from around the church) who all stay on a college campus in a great location and learn, laugh and serve.

  • When: July 10-14
  • Where: University of Central Oklahoma, Edmond, Okla.
  • Who: students in grades 9-12 this school year (a maximum of 24 students will be able to go)
  • Cost: $475. The diocese will give each youth participant a $125 scholarship, so the cost to youth is $350. This includes travel to Oklahoma City, 11 meals, lodging, all regularly scheduled workshops and plenary sessions during EYE.
  • Priority deadline to sign up: March 15 or when dorm capacity is reached, whichever happens first. Please register ASAP.

> Episcopal Summer Mega Camp registration now open. Camp is June 4-10 at Camp Wood YMCA. Camp Wood features a variety of activities such as horseback riding, archery, climbing tower, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, water slide, mud slide, arts and crafts, and sports. The volunteer Episcopal staff provides solid Christian education, featuring worship, music, small group discussions and prayer.

Camp is open to those currently in grades 3-12, and their friends.

Episcopal Public Policy Network offers way to support refugees

The Episcopal Public Policy Network, a part of the Episcopal Church Office of Government Relations in Washington, D.C., has developed a plan to help Episcopalians support refugees.

The “2x4 Fight for Refugees Campaign” involves, over the next two months, committing to call your national, state and local elected officials at least four times to let them know you support the welcome of refugees.

EPPN is following policies enacted by the Episcopal Church’s General Convention in offering this program.

March 5 is Episcopal Relief & Development Sunday

Episcopalians are invited to mark Episcopal Relief & Development Sunday on March 5, the first Sunday in Lent, with special prayers, bulletin inserts and a dedicated offering to support the organization’s mission of healing a hurting world.

An annual Lenten tradition in the Episcopal Church, Episcopal Relief & Development Sunday is an opportunity for congregations to focus on prayer and action to address global needs.

Clergy news

The Rev. Vicki Smith has accepted the call to become rector of St. David’s, Topeka, beginning Feb. 27. Smith has been a rector at Episcopal churches in Ohio and North Carolina, and she holds a Doctorate in Parish Revitalization. Smith, who moved to the diocese last year, lives in Lawrence with her husband, Kevin, who is Dean of Libraries at the University of Kansas.

The Rev. Amy Truhe, a pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, will be serving St. Paul’s, Clay Center, as a long-term supply.

Anniversaries of ordinations
