SUBJECT:Holiday Crime Prevention Tips
Once again, it is that time of year when we all get the holiday spirit by shopping, visiting friends and relatives, enjoying holiday gatherings and exchanging gifts. It can also be a time when busy people become careless and vulnerable to theft and other crimes. Taking a few prevention measures can help keep your holidays safe and joyous.
Shop with care:
During the holiday season, it is easy to be distracted or in a rush to complete your shopping errands. Reduce your chances of being victimized by a criminal.
- Even though you are rushed and thinking about a thousand things, always be aware of your surroundings and stay alert. Don’t become distracted when talking or texting on your cell phone.
- Don't display large sums of cash in public. Be discreet about the money or other valuables you are carrying. Don't overload yourself with packages.
- Don’t leave your purse or personal electronic devices in a shopping cart while shopping. It only takes a thief a few seconds to steal these items and disappear when you turn your back to your shopping cart.
- Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason. At this time of year, "con-artists" may try various methods of distracting you with the intention of taking your money or belongings.
- If you must use an ATM, use one inside of a well-populated building or a well-lighted area.
- Keep a close eye on your children while shopping.
- Be alert in public restrooms. If anything seems amiss or if a group of people is loitering in the area, leave quickly and find another facility.
- Stay alert in crowds to protect your valuables. A thief can use the cover of the crowd to make a quick getaway after stealing your wallet, purse or shopping bag.
- Don't keep your keys in your purse. If your purse is stolen, the thief will have your address and keys to your home. Keep your keys in your pocket. Make sure nobody is in the car before entering, and lock the doors immediately when you get inside.
- Try to park as close to the entrance of the mall or store as possible. Walk with others and stay alert for people standing behind parked cars or pillars. At night, park under a light whenever possible.
- Make a note of your parking spot so that you don't have to wander around the parking lot after shopping.
- Don't leave packages visible on the seats or floor of your car.
- After the holidays, don’t advertise gifts received by the boxes left for the garbage collection. Destroy boxes and place in a sealed, non-clear garbage bag.
If you are traveling during the holidays here are some tips to keep the burglar away from your home:
- Place lights and a radio on a timer so your home appears occupied.
- Ask a neighbor to watch your home, shovel snow, and park in the driveway from time to time.
- Don’t leave descriptive telephone answering machine messages indicatingyou are not home.
- Don't forget to have mail and newspaper delivery stopped or picked up by a trusted neighbor. If newspapers and mail pile up, it's a sure sign you're gone.
If you're out just for the evening or attending a party:
- When you leave the house, turn off all tree lights and blow out all candles.
- Be sure to lock doors and windows when you leave, even if it's just a few minutes.
- Don't display gifts where they can be seen from outside
- Plan to have a designated driver or use public transportation if you are going to consume alcoholic beverages. Never drink and drive.
Beware of scams:
- Visit the FBI’s web site at to view some of the most common fraud schemes and tips to help prevent you from being victimized.
- Beware also if a stranger comes to the door. Criminals sometimes pose as couriers delivering gifts.
- And it's not uncommon for people to try to take advantage of others' generosity during the holidays by going door-to-door for charitable donations when there's no charity involved. Ask for identification, and find out how the funds will be used. If you aren't satisfied, don't give. Instead, make a gift to the Sister Dorothy Anne Cahill Employees Assistance Fund.
Happy Holidays!
Last but not least, have a happy, safe holiday season and don't let holiday stress get the best of your holiday spirit. Make time to get together with family, friends, and neighbors. And think about reaching out in the spirit of the season and helping someone who's less fortunate or lonely.
