Kent Island Wrestling Program

Academics First!

  • Queen Anne’s County Policy mandates that students must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA in order to participate in athletics. The county’s policy refers to the interim grades of students every four weeks. The student will be ineligible if the student’s grades do not meet a 2.0 when the grades are reported.
  • ***Any student that becomes ineligible may remain with the team if the student participates in study hall during practice hours, at ALL practices. If the student misses a practice-study hall, then the student will be dismissed from the team.
  • The coaching staff holds the right to check grades of all the students on the roster at any time.
  • If a student has an E (59%) or lower in any class, OR the student has less than a 2.0, the student may be sat from competition until the grade is raised.

Behavior Expectations

  • The Kent Island Wrestling Team will be an influence for good within the community, everywhere we travel, and at all times.
  • The Kent Island Wrestling Coaching Staff is dedicating their personal time to better student-athletes and create a more positive athletic experience for them. The staff is not there to be friends with student-athletes. Accordingly, students should always treat coaches and any other adults at team events with the utmost respect.
  • Language and actions may be deemed inappropriate and can result in an offense. First offenses can range in consequence from a warning to sitting out one or multiple team events. Repeated offenses may range in consequence from a warning to dismissal from the team.
  • The Kent Island Wrestling Team will act in accordance with all QACPS policies. This includes the drug and alcohol policy. Any student that violates this policy will be dismissed from the team.
  • Expectations extend beyond the school grounds and any student behavior that does not positively reflect on themselves, the wrestling team, or Kent Island High School may result in a consequence ranging from a warning to immediate dismissal from the team.

Tryouts

  • Tryouts will start on the first practice on November 15th and continue through November 26th.
  • The season roster will be set following practice on November 26th.

Weight Class Certification

  • ALL Wrestlers must attend a weight certification session provided by the conference on November 19th.
  • No wrestler is allowed to be separately certified by their own physician.
  • Behydrated and as close to the weight class that you want to wrestle as possible in order to be possibly certified at that weight class. To guarantee certification, you must be hydrated & at your goal weight class.

Equipment

  • All wrestlers must purchase a pair of wrestling shoes and black, blue, white, silver or gray headgear.
  • If you have braces, you are required to purchase a cover mouth guard for them.

Weight Class In-Season

  • Students’ weight-classes in competitions this season will be determined by the coaching staff.
  • Students should conference with the coaches if they want to discuss their weight class.
  • Wrestle-offs will occur periodically to serve only as an evaluation tool for the coaching staff.
  • Winning a wrestle off does not guarantee a student will wrestle at that particular weight class.
  • Winning a wrestle off may not even guarantee a student will wrestle in the starting lineup.

Attendance

  • Attendance at all team practices and events is mandatory.
  • Any unexcused absence will result in sitting out of the next team event.
  • Unexcused absences include family vacations, after-school detentions, school suspensions, etc…
  • Any excused absence may result in sitting out of the next team event.
  • At ALL times, except emergencies, the coaching staff must be notified prior to the absence.
  • This includes sick days from school. Directly notify a coach via email, not a teammate.

*Without notice, the absence will considered unexcused.*

• More than one unexcused absence may result in dismissal from the team

  • Unexcused Tardy Policy

1st offense – Warning

2nd offense – Final Warning and Student will clean up wrestling room, locker room, and/or wrestling office.

3rd offense – Student will sit out of next team event

  • Leaving Team Events – All students on the wrestling team will be required to travel back from away events on the team bus unless they have signed the Liability Form provided by QACPS. Students will be able to ride home with their parent/guardian only.
