Re:Textbook Adoptions

The textbook adoptions for the upcoming Summer and Fall ’07 semesters will be due on April 20, 2007. In order to maximize the value of each student’s books, it is extremely important this deadline is met. In addition to requesting that you complete the Fall adoptions, The Store requests that faculty members submit adoptions for Summer and Mini Terms as soon as possible because of the early start dates for some classes.

Attached you will find adoption history from the Fall 2006 and Spring 2007 semester. If you need the adoption history from earlier semesters, please call The Story (8135) and request a printout for the semester and the class. This adoption history is just a reference for each department—it no longer serves as a substitution for an order form. Please go online to adopt the books for each course.

Due to the new website, this online adoption procedure is different from past semesters. The adoption process will take a little longer than usual the first time you attempt it, but once basic information is in the system, it will move much more quickly. This first set of tasks needs to be completed just once; after that, you will be able to enter your email address and password and go straight to adopting your books.

REGISTERING FOR THE FIRST TIME

You may access “The Store” website by going to “Spider”.

Look for Quick Links and click“Textbook Adoptions.”

DO NOT YET ENTER YOUR EMAIL AND PASSWORD. Since this will be your first time on site, select “Register Here” at the bottom of the page

On the “Select Registration Option” screen, select “Create profile for Adopting Course Materials

On the next screen, which asks for information, you will need to fill in all the boxes marked with an asterisk.
» Under “Faculty Registration,” enter your email address and select your own password. Do not use your GeorgetownCollege network password.
» Where it says “Department Username” and “Department Password,” you will have to enter a department username that is standard for your department. For undergraduate faculty, you will enter “ung” followed by the letters used to designate your department. For instance, If you are submitting an adoption for a History class, HIS111, for example, your username will be “unghis.” For graduate faculty, place “grd” at the beginning instead of “ung”. For example, Graduate Education, EDU504, Section A, would enter “grdedu” as the username and “faculty” as the password. The password for EVERYONE is faculty. Be sure to use lower case for both username and password. If you teach in more than one department or at more than one level, enter your primary department/level; you can add department designations once you’re registered.
» Under Billing Address, enter the information requested with the asterisk; don’t worry--you won’t be billed for anything!
» Then hit the button that says “Submit Faculty Registration” (at the bottom of the page).

AFTER INITIAL REGISTRATION: ADOPT BOOKS

Return to the “Faculty Adoptions” page (or, if you have logged out, go back to the “Textbook Adoptions” link on Spider in and enter your email address and password).
STANDARD ADOPTION (RECOMMENDED)
You will perform THREE separate tasks: first building your course list, then building your textbook list, then merging the two. Only AFTER you have completed your list of textbooks will you connect the textbook to the class.

1. BUILD YOUR COURSE LIST
Before you attempt to search for textbooks, you should build your Course List (which is the first link on the Textbook Adoptions page, entitled “Enter Course Information.”)

When you reach that page, enter the information for each class you teach this semester. You will discover that the drop-down menu for “Select a Department” will work, but the menu for “Select a Course” will not. Click “add course” (on the right) and enter your course number. Enter the basic information and then hit “Add to Course List.” Repeat this process for all of your courses for Fall semester.Click “Faculty Adoption” link (at either the top or bottom of the page) and move on to the next step: Find Course Materials.

The Store would like you submit an adoption for each course and section even if it will be a “No Text Required” class. This will aid in better record keeping. Therefore, enter all of your classes on this list, even if you won’t be adopting a book.

2. FIND COURSE MATERIALS (BUILD YOUR TEXTBOOK LIST)

After you have built your course list, you should build the list of textbooks you are ordering for all your courses (you will not yet connect them to each individual course—that will happen in step 3)

You will eventually be able to Browse Adoption History to find your books, but for now you will need to select “Adoption Textbooks Search” (which is at the top of the page) or “Browse for Textbooks” (which is under the “Find Course Materials” heading).
As you search for textbooks, DO NOT enter “The” at the beginning of the title, even if it is part of the title. If you cannot find the textbook you wish to adopt, contact The Store at ext. 8135.

As you select your books, they will go into an “adoption cart” that you will select from when it comes time to match your courses with your books.
3. MATCH COURSES AND MATERIALS

Once you have selected your books, you go to your “adoption cart” or click “Add/Edit Course Materials” on the “Faculty Adoptions Home Page.”

You will see a check box next to your courses and (lower down) next to each book. Click the box next to the course for which you are doing adoptions, and then click the box next to the titles of the books for that course.

BE SURE TO SELECT the “usage” (recommended, required, etc.) in the drop-down box at the right of each book title; then hit the button at the bottom of the page that says “add to selected course”

QUICK ADOPTION OPTION
If you know the ISBN numbers for the books you wish to adopt, you may wish to experiment with this option. Call The Store if you have questions during the process, and they will guide you through it.

If you have any problems submitting your adoptions, please don’t hesitate to call The Store at ext. 8135. The Store will be looking forward to getting feedback from all of you as you complete this online adoption process.

Thank you for your cooperation!
