KS1 and KS2 Online Safety Results 2017
A random selection of children from KS1 and KS2 were asked a series of questions about online safety. These are our key findings. Those highlighted in yellow are positive findings. Those highlighted in turquoise are areas to be aware of and consider when your child is accessing the Internet.
KS1
- 100% of children have access to an electronic device.
- 50% of children use the Internet to play games.
- 8% of parents always sit with their child while they are playing on the Internet.
50% of parents sometimes sit with their child while they are playing on the Internet.
42% of parents never sit with their child while they are playing on the Internet. –It is very important to sit with your child when they are using games that require online access, especially in KS1. The device should also be in a shared location, such as your living room.
- 50% of children talk to people on the Internet via gaming, Facetime, Skype etc.
- 92% of children feel they know what to do if something upsets them online.
Responses include: turning the screen off, pressing the ‘x’ button, telling an adult, leaving the device to go and play outside.
- 83% of children have access to a mobile phone that belongs to a family member- Check your restrictions on the device. Have you checked that the apps are age appropriate on the mobile device, especially if it belongs to an older brother or sister? Have you restricted access to text messages and email while they are using the device? Have you restricted access to the app store, to ensure that your child cannot download apps using your account?
- 100% of children feel safe with using the Internet at home and in school.
KS2
- 100% of children have access to an electronic device.
12% of children use it every day.
88% of children use it sometimes.
- 87% of children use their electronic device for gaming.
41% of children use their electronic device for browsing the Internet.
25% of children use their electronic device for email.
79% of children use their electronic device to watch videos on YouTube- Have you adjusted your parental controls, for example to restrict videos that are aimed at Over 18s from playing?
- 45% of children use online games.
38% of these children talk to people when online. 60% of these children say they either sometimes or never know who these people are. – Have you discussed potential ‘stranger danger’ with your child? Are you aware of what messages your child is receiving?
- 29% of children have a social networking account – Most social networking accounts are for children over the age of 13. Children in Year 6 are too young to have signed up. Do you monitor what they post and share online?
All of parents are aware that their child has a social networking account.
- 96% of children feel safe on the Internet at home and in school.
- 95% of children would know what to do if they felt they were being bullied.
Responses include: tell an adult, report the person, not use the website again, shut the computer down, ask parents for advice, report it to someone they trust.
- 9% of parents always sit with their child when they are using the Internet.
59% of parents sometimes sit with their child or might check up on them every so often.
32% of parents never sit with their child while they are browsing online – Have you checked your child’s browsing history? Do you know which websites your child is accessing?
