JOB DESCRIPTION: HOUSEKEEPER

CLASSIFICATION: CUSTODIAN I

NATURE OF WORK:

Performs routine custodial tasks and heavy manual work in the care and cleaning of the juvenile detention facility and grounds. Position requires shift work including weekends. Work is performed under the supervision of the Assistant Director - Support Services.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

- Vacuums, sweeps, dusts and mops floors, strips and waxes floors, polishes floors with buffer. Polishes

furniture and equipment. Washes windows, blinds, walls. Shampoos carpets and furniture.

- Cleans, sanitizes and supplies rest rooms. Cleans clogged drains and toilets or reports for repairs.

- Empties and cleans trash cans.

- Performs heavy cleaning tasks and tasks unauthorized for juveniles in the living areas.

- Changes light bulbs, makes minor repairs.

- Reports all needs for repairs immediately to the Maintenance Specialist or other administrative staff.

- Maintains grounds and parking areas in a neat, clean appearance, including mowing, trimming,

sweeping, snow/ice removal.

- Picks up supplies, unloads delivery trucks, places supplies in designated storage areas.

- Insures all tools and equipment are accounted for at all times.

- Washes and cleans vehicles.

- Delivers and picks up Commission vehicles for maintenance.

- Follows safety procedures for use of equipment and in the performance of duties.

- Follows security procedure for the facility.

- Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM ENTRY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Some knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.

Some knowledge of occupational safety hazards.

Ability to use equipment and supplies safely, effectively, and economically.

Ability to read, understand, and follow written instructions as well as follow oral instructions.

Ability to work well with others.

MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any education or experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities cited above.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Requires an acceptable background investigation. Cannot be listed with any state as having a founded child abuse complaint. Cannot use illegal drugs on or off the job. Requires a valid Virginia driver’s license. Must maintain a current tuberculin test.
