  1. Dr. Sibell presented the internal review of the Clinical Neurophysiology program. He indicated that the program has addressed all citations from the previous site review by providing the program director’s CV and outlining required disease based topics in didactic sessions. The program is in compliance with duty hour requirements. The program indicated there is no official FTE allocated for the program director or the program coordinator. Recommendations from the internal review committee include: formal FTE support for the program director and coordinator; development of comprehensive portfolios including submissions and reflections from the trainees; and development of outcomes measures to assess competency in the core competencies. GMEC unanimously voted to support the program and recommendations as written.
  1. Dr. Pat Brunett presented the internal review of the Psychosomatic Medicine program. He mentioned that it is a strong, one-year program with up to two trainees per year. The prior ACGME citation related to limited clinical sites and patent demographics has been addressed. In addition to the primary site at the VA, the program will utilize a new VA community-based outpatient clinic with a women’s health focus, as well as the OHSU Center for Women’s health as a site for continuity clinics. The prior internal review identified a concern with limited administrative support, which continues to be a problem. Recommendations from the IRC include: expanded efforts to identify administrative support for the program, either from the VA or OHSU; greater emphasis on rotation goals and objectives; continued efforts to enhance patient age and gender diversity; a travel stipend for trainees to attend meetings; and efforts to increase the fellow’s graded responsibility over the course of the fellowship. Dr. Cedfeldt indicated that the “Blue Ribbon Panel” of the VA has recently issued a long-awaited report regarding GME, and of particular interest the funding to support teachers, program coordinators and program directors. GMEC approved the program unanimously, and asked that Dr. Girard draft a letter requesting additional administrative support for the program.
  1. Dr. Girard and Ms. Simmons presented the proposed salaries for the 2010/2011 academic year. OHSU resident salaries, in combination with the retirement benefit, provide the residents with a generous package. Residents on the committee indicated they appreciated the increase, especially in the current economy. The group voted to approve the salaries and benefits.
  1. Dr. Gupta presented information regarding a request for establishing an Interventional Cardiology fellowship program. He mentioned that the current clinical volume would be sufficient to support this addition and that there are sufficient clinical faculty and conferences to provide support and education. He reviewed workforce needs and indicated that there may be funding through a slot that will not be needed for the general fellows, with grant funding in the future. Dr. Cooney, the Program Director for all of Internal Medicine, has supported the fellowship. Dr. Gilhooly asked if this would impact current cardiology fellows. Dr. Gupta responded that the fellowship would not impact the current fellows because the new fellow would not scrub in for interventional procedures. Dr. Gilhooly asked if it was okay to move dollars from the core fellowship to a new fellowship position. This would have to be approved by the hospital administration. GMEC voted to approve the program moving forward for accreditation.
  1. Dr. Dan Handel and Alan Lines presented a proposal for an Emergency Medicine Administrative fellowship program. The intent of the program would be to foster future EM Department leaders. Dr. Brunett indicated full support of the fellowship. The fellowship would not be ACGME-accredited, and therefore does not necessarily need approval from GMEC, but Dan and Alan wanted the group to be aware of this new opportunity. The group voted to support the program.
  1. Ms. Simmons mentioned that programs continue to be behind in submission of their Program Letters of Agreement for Electives. Ms. Chatelain reminded the group that GME needs at least one month of processing time for in-state electives and two months for out-of-state electives. She went on to say that the process is complex and involves components of compliance for liability, ACGME, etc. and the time is essential.
  1. A request was made for a resident volunteer for the Internal Review of Pediatric Emergency Medicine in January. Dr. Angela Watkins volunteered.
