  1. Explain the central topic and purpose of the workshop/seminar. What are the presenter/facilitator’s goals for this workshop?

The purpose of this workshop was to facilitate awareness on the best practices for working with student-veterans. By providing the perspectives of the veteran student, the facilitators focused on the unique demographic of the student-veteran, discussed challenges specific to this group, and highlighted the beneficial skills and knowledge that student-veterans possess and can bring to the table academically.

  1. What information in the workshop/seminar was most valuable to you?

I found this workshop to be particularly useful for a number of reasons. This workshop provided different perspectives of veteran students and military life in general. The discussion on difficulties associated with transition from military to civilian status and challenges associated with campus life for a veteran (age difference, different life experience, possible ptsd/tbi) was very informative. Additionally, I also found the information on the university’s initiatives to assist student-veterans helpful and I will definitely use this information in the future. We also brainstormed strategies to deal with student-veteran specific concerns and difficulties in the classroom, which was very valuable. Finally, the student panel discussion provided unique perspectives of current students at CSU.

  1. How will you connect that information to your own pedagogical endeavors?

I will apply a good deal of the information gained in this workshop. After learning about the unique strengths that student veterans bring to the classroom, I will apply more strength- based pedagogical strategies with these students to work with the student-veterans to build upon inherent skills. I also now know where to send veteran students if they have difficulties. Finally, I believe I am more confident in handling issues that may come up in the classroom concerning student veterans and their unique backgrounds.

  1. After attending this workshop/seminar, what additional information would you like to seek about this subject?

After attending this workshop, I would like to seek more information on veteran specific resources on campus. While this workshop provided a list of resources, I would like to learn more details about these particular resources. I would also like to learn more about what specific obstacle student veterans face on the CSU campus, rather than student veterans in general.
