Patty and Dave Green did go to Disney World and Patty walked with Dave the 5K walk around Disney World on her birthday. That was her goal when she first got Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Mike and Elaine Von der Porten joined the Greens on this trip. See article later in Newsletter.

Dancing is on hold for a little while for Lou Ann Plasse who had surgery on her left knee last Friday. Lou Ann had a meniscal tear in her left knee that has been causing her a great deal of pain – making it difficult to square dance and bowl – activities Lou Ann enjoys. Her surgery went well and the doctor was able to repair the meniscus, so now it is just a matter of time for her knee to heal enough to come back dancing. We all wish her a quick recovery and hope to see her back on the dance floor soon!!

Jim & Carole went to San Antonio Texas to visit their Daughter, Son-in-law and two grandkids for a week and then went down to San Jose for 4 days to take care of two grandkids while their daughter and son-in-law attended a friend’s wedding in Texas.

Square Dance ClothingSale -- March 31 –

Accompanying A "Fun" Night

By Patty Green

March 31 is the 5th Thursday of the month, and we normally make that a "fun" night where we bring snacks and dance to CD's and just have fun.In March we would like to make the 5th Thursday not only a fun night, but a night where we have square dance clothing available for our newer dancers. Many of us have skirts, petticoats, and shirts that we would like to share -- at very low prices -- to get our newer dancers into square dance attire as they are just about ready to start attending hoedowns -- ours and others.

If you have something you would like to include in the sale, please contact Patty at 537-7000 or Melissa at 538-1636 so we can plan our evening. We will have other information available too about square dance clothing, dances, vendors, etc., so plan to join us for this fun evening too!! Eric Henerlau will be calling that night.

Disney World or Bust

By Patty Green

Well, Patty Green’s hope to compete in Disney World’s Princess Half Marathon for her 60th birthday was lofty to begin with, but after the onset of Guillain-Barre Syndrome, it became a real pipe-dream. So, the new goal was to participate in the “Beauty and the Beast” Family 5K on her birthday. 3.1 miles isn’t the same as a 13 mile half marathon, but it’s still a good goal to strive for when you are learning to walk again and have been using a walker to get around. So … off to Disney World Dave and Patty went with Michael and Elaine Von der Porten as travel companions and cheerleaders.

Up at 4:30 a.m. to catch a 5:15 shuttle to EPCOT was the start of the day. Lots of milling around for the next hour and a half as walkers and runners arrived, stretched, had pictures taken with Beauty (Belle), the Beast, and Gaston. At 6:30 a.m., folks started lining up for the 7:00 a.m. start – with serious runners up front, casual walkers and families, in the middle, and strollers and Guillain-Barre “sufferers” near the end of the pack. And – we were off!! Dave and Patty walked together with Patty pushing her wheelchair in case she got too tired to walk and needed to ride to the finish. The walk circled the EPCOT parking lot before going in a side gate near Mexico in EPCOT’s World Showcase. At that point, Patty was really bringing up the rear, with only about a dozen folks behind her. But, not to worry – she was still walking and not riding – and since she was wearing a “Happy Birthday Patty” pin from the Disney team, all the Disney employees wished her a Happy Birthday as she walked by – really inspiring her to keep walkin’ and keeping her spirits up!

As luck would have it, Disney had characters out along the walking route so folks could enjoy “photo opportunities” with them. So, when others stopped in Germany to have pictures taken with Snow White, Patty and Dave pushed on – making up ground. Yeah! Again, in Morocco, when folks stopped for photos of Aladdin and Jasmine, Patty and Dave pushed further forward, and so it went … no longer at the back of the pack!! But, they didn’t break any speed records for this 3.1 mile walk – it took 1 hour and 6 minutes (+) to complete, but they completed it!! No stinkin’ Guillain-Barre is going to keep this girl down!!

Early in the walk, just before entering
EPCOT’S World Showcase, not many
people behind Patty and Dave.
At the finish (center picture behind the person making the BIG finish) Patty and Dave came through like champs and then posed for Disney with their participation ribbons and tee shirts. Good birthday walk!!

More On the Florida Trip

By Patty Green

One of the other big events for the Greens and the Von der Portens while they were in Florida was watching the final launch of the Shuttle Discovery, which launched from Cape Canaveral on Thursday, February 24. With a “hold” at 2 minutes and 40 seconds, it looked like the launch might not go off as planned, but – not to worry – the weather computer problem was located and determined not to be a “show stopper” and the launch went off without a hitch. A little difficult to see in the picture, but the shuttle launch was spectacular!

Mickey and Minnie With Patty – A Happy Birthday

By Patty Green

We celebrated another birthday – Patty Green’s 60th.

Patty and Dave were gone to Florida on her birthday,
so Mary Ann organized a party for March. The real
guests of honor were Minnie and Mickey Mouse
who stopped by to wish Patty a Happy Birthday.
In case you don’t recognize them, that is Melissa
Stoufer and Gloria Richardson dressed as
Minnie and Mickey. What a great party!!
Patty thanks all of those who attended and helped
her celebrate this BIG birthday!! Be ready, she is
planning on at least 40 more!
Thanks to Eric Hollowell for the pictures!
