MAJORS LAKES NEWS LETTER

QUARTER FOUR 2011

(In conjunction with Country Sports) WHAT A DIFFERENCE A COUPLE OF YEARS CAN MAKE

I am sure a lot of our members will remember the introduction of perch in to Majors Lakes approximately two years ago? When introduced the Perch were around 2 to 3 inches in length, but as you will see from the above photo, they are really coming along well and now being caught with a weight in excess of 2lb.

We are also pleased to say that the Barbel and Chub introduced a few years before the Perch are also growing well, and as you will see from the second photo above, all of the fish are in excellent condition.

A VERY NEAR MISS (A CONTRIBUTION FROM JOHN OSMER)

On August 2nd I was fishing my usual spot on peg7. At around 10.15am the big silver birch over the lake and behind the roadway started to creak. It obviously wasn't squirrels in the tree making that much noise. After a few minutes the tree simply gave up and fell down! A good job no-one was fishing that side of the lake.

STRANGER THAN FICTION (A CONTRIBUTION FROM JOHN OSMER)

Date = 21stJune. Time = 12 noon. Peg 7.

I was quiver tip fishing using luncheon meat tipped with sweetcorn bait. I'd had a couple of nice Barbel and a Tench on this bait. I cast again hoping for another nice fish. I had a few knocks on the quiver tip, but nothing to strike at. This went on for a good few minutes then suddenly the tip was pulled right round. I stuck and hit into a decent fish. Imagine my amazement to find it was a good sized perch! I was surprised it took meat and corn bait, but all became clear when the fish was safely in the net. My bait had been taken by a Gudgeon which in turn was taken by the perch! Incidentally - the Gudgeon survived to swim away.

MATCH NEWS

More and more anglers are now coming along and fishing our monthly matches and the matches which are being won on better and better weights from all parts of the lake.

However there is still room for more anglers.

Why don’t you become one of those that join in the fun (because that is what it is “fun”) in 2012? The entry is just £6.00 with £5.00 going towards the winner’s pool and £1.00 going to club funds, to pay for the shields etc.

PHOTO GALLERY

In 2012 we would like to put photographs of your catch in to the 2012 News Letter. So please send your photos to me at the Majors Lakes email address () with the following information. The peg you were fishing, from the bait used and the weight of the fish (approximate weight will do).

ARMY FUR AND FEATHER MATCH

As noted above the lake was closed to allow the Chatham Garrison Angling Club to hold their annual Fur and Feather match at our lake on 28th November. The match was well attended with some fifteen anglers participating, considering the cold weather on the day. The winning angler Adie Cnuter was fishing from Peg No18 with a catch consisting of Tench for a weight of 3lb 10oz.

THE DON BIRD COMMEMORATIVE TREE

The planting of a commemorative tree, bought by old friend Bill Andrews in memory of the late Don Bird, took place at Majors Lakes on Sunday 18th September. This was followed by Dons family coming along to Majors Lakes on Sunday 2nd October and spreading Dons ashes into the lake adjacent to peg No 20, Don’s favourite peg. Don’s tree can be seen on the right hand side, just as you enter the gate.

SELLING OR SWAPPING YOUR UNWANTED TACKLE

If you have any unwanted tackle, why not let us know and we can advertise it in the next news letter on your behalf. You will recall that recently Derek Shields advertised his Milo box for sale. Well a few weeks after it was seen in the clubs news letter by another member, a deal was done. The member now has a new box and Derek now has a few quid more in the bank.

Or if you prefer, let us know what you would like to swap and what you would like to swap it for, and we will once again put it in the news letter for you, if you have a photo, even better.

MEMBERS CHRISTMAS MEAL 2nd DECEMBER

Below is a small selection of photos of the four couples that attended the first Majors Lakes Christmas meal. The venue for this year’s meal was The Tickled Trout in West Farleigh. I hope I can say for all of those there on the evening, it was a success and something we will be hoping to take forward in to 2012.

As with this year, the 2012 Christmas meal will be an open invitation to anybody that feels they would like to come along.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND A PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR

I am sure I speak for all members when I pay “thanks” to all three of our bailiffs (Mark, Steve and Colin) who have worked incredibly hard throughout 2011 to make our lake an idyllic environment for us all to fish in. Their continued work has given us all a lake to be proud of. It is clean, tidy and very well maintained a true credit to all three of them. We must not forget the owners and staff of Country Sports either, who have also supported the bailiffs in all of their endeavours to improve our lake.

We also pay thanks to all of the members that have come along in 2011 to assist the bailiffs at the work parties. Without their help much would not get done?

And from me, a personal thank you to all members that have made contributions to the news letter’s in 2011.

All that now remains is for me to say, on behalf of our bailiffs and all at Country Sports, is......

“HAVE A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A VERY PROSPEROUS 2012” We look forward to seeing you at the lake next year, and possibly at our BBQ in July.
