Canadian BIM Update

Friday, October 12, 2018- CANBIM Announces Certification and Accreditation for BIM Professionals

On Wednesday September 30th at its AGM, Canada BIM Council announced that it has officially launched its Standardized Certification and Accreditation for BIM Professionals and applications are now being accepted.

The aim of the CANBIM Accreditation & Certification Program is to create a national body providing a benchmark for Individuals, AECOO companies/organizations, academic institutions and training providers to be certified to nationally standardized and recognized levels of BIM Competency, the combination of conceptual knowledge, BIM skills (practical knowledge) and experience necessary to perform a BIM-related task, and Process Management, the setting up, managing or participating in a 3D Digital Engineering, Virtual Design & Construction, and BIM Coordination Process.

Canada BIM Council’s Board of Directors is excited to take this next step in recognizing, establishing and guiding national industry BIM standardsand competency levels to ensure a productive, healthy and sustainable BIM-eco system for Canada’s BIM partners. The CANBIMAccreditation & Certification Program will guide, facilitate, and foster a closer relationship between educational institutions, training providers and the building industry to ensure that what is taughtisconsistently relevant to what is needed, and will allow for the pursuit of constructive dialogue and mutual recognition with similar certification and accreditation bodies in other BIM-healthy countries.

CANBIM’sprogramwill consist of progressive levels of certification, each with their own set of criteria and benchmarks, forboth industry professionals and organizations. “By clearly defining standardized certification and accreditation, we will be able to turn our attention to establishing qualification profiles for BIM positions in companies, and map those same profiles to BIM education outcomes”, states Pietro Ferrari, CANBIM Director and Chair of the CANBIMResearch and Education Committee. Ferrari, who isspearheading this effort with the guidance and input of the CANBIM Board, adds “The CANBIM Accreditation & Certification Program will establish a benchmark point-of-reference for higher education to ensure that the skills that are being taught in courses and programs are relevant to,and meet the needs of, the realities of an ever-evolving and healthy industry.”

Friday, October 12, 2018- CANBIM Announces Release of AEC(CAN)BIM Protocol v2 & AEC(CAN) BIM Protocol for Revit v2

On Wednesday September 30th at its AGM, Canada BIM Council announced that it has officially released its latest BIM Protocols; AEC(CAN)BIM Protocol v2 & AEC(CAN) BIM Protocol for Revit v2.

In 2011 CANBIM initiated discussions with AEC(UK) committee to develop a parallel protocol based on the AEC(UK) protocol. CANBIM believes that the AEC BIM community in Canada is better served by taking already existing, working standards and investing time in collaboration to make the current standard better, rather than simply reinventing and creating a unique standard for Canada. Over time, the AEC(CAN) BIM Protocol has developed into a strong, standalone document. While some of the original framework is evident, the document has evolved with the Canadian market and reflects conditions from across the country. This latest version of the AEC(CAN) BIM Protocol and AEC(CAN) BIM Protocol for Revit is truly a Canadian document and has been developed by representatives of firms from across Canada. It is through the support of these firms that documents like the AEC(CAN) BIM Protocol and AEC(CAN) BIM Protocol for Revit can continue to be updated and remain relevant in our ever-changing industry.

CANBIM’s Designers Committee has been actively engaged in the process of updating the AEC(CAN) BIM Protocol and AEC(CAN) BIM Protocol for Revit. CANBIM’s members volunteer their time to participate in committees with representatives from architectural, engineering, and construction companies across Canada. These members are from firms both large and small, working on projects of all sizes.

It is important to the committee that the standards development process remains adequate, relevant, and consistent with core industry standards. The committee is made up of representatives from CANBIM members from firms across the country and recommends the development of additional CANBIM standards while commenting and providing input on other CANBIM activities.
