Anatomy & Physiology

Instructor: Kerry ZimmermanEmail:

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is an advanced science class for juniors and seniors who have successfully completed both Biology & Chemistry. We will thoroughly study the structure and function of the mammalian body, emphasizing the human body. We will also address elements of human genetics and topics of interest in the medicine and public health. A series of field trips, labs, and guest speakers will provide us the opportunity to observe and interact with a variety of medical professionals. The list of potential speakers and trip destinations includeAdventures in Medicine & Science and WUSTL Medical

AIMS

  • To provide students with a challenging and creative scientific curriculum.
  • To provide students with opportunities to apply their knowledge of science and technology
  • To enable students to develop their abilities to analyze, evaluate, and synthesize information.
  • To provide opportunities for students to engage in scientific investigations that are both thought provoking and relevant.

OBJECTIVES

Demonstrate both an understanding of -(and ability to apply)- the following :

  • Scientific facts, concepts, and terminology
  • Effective methods of communicating scientific knowledge

Demonstrate an ability to construct, analyze, and evaluate:

  • Hypotheses, research questions, and predictions
  • Investigative strategies and techniques to collect authentic data.
  • Explanations and conclusions derived from scientific explorations

Upon Completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Describe the structure & function of the organs in the human body
  2. Give examples of homeostasis in human physiology
  3. Use appropriate anatomical terms
  4. List in order the steps involved in human reproduction
  5. Describe the causes, effects, and prevention of several major human illnesses
  6. Use technology to access information on specific illnesses
  7. Work cooperatively in a small group setting
  8. Relate concepts of chemistry & biochemistry to human physiology
  9. Describe how body systems work together

Expectations:

  1. You are expected to participate and bring all needed materials for each class.
  2. You are expected to raise your hands if you have a question.
  3. You are expected to be in class on time. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class. Chronic lateness--tardy more than five times in a 5 week grading period—will be reflected in your participation grade and will result in a lunchtime detention.
  4. You are expected to behave in a courteous manner: no electronic devices, no food, or open drink (closed water bottles only), no sleeping in class.
  5. You are expected to respect your fellow students and not interrupt them.
  6. You are expected to cooperate with your teacher and be respectful.
  7. You are expected to show respect for the property and personal rights of others.
  8. If you are absent, please see me when you return to school to hand in homework or schedule a missed test. If a student does not see me to re-schedule a missed test or quiz, the student will be penalized ten percentage points for each day the student does not make contact with the teacher.
  9. Students are responsible for missed work.
  10. Follow the Metro Handbook

I am looking forward to a successful and exciting school year for all. I expect you will find the activities interesting, challenging, and educational. Activities will include:
