French Culture Fashion Project

In studying French fashion, it is important also to recognize the historical importance that fashion has played in French life. This project will help give you a fuller understanding of fashion and its role in French society.

This project has two parts. The first part is research. You must choose a time period to research French fashion. Each student should choose a different time period. We will spend time in the library and in the computer lab to help you with this research. You must have at least two (2) print sources recorded for this project. Each source must be cited in the correct format, using the guide attached.

You will use the information you get in your research to write a 1-page typed paper that tells about French fashion in the time period you chose. You should look to include such information as:

·  terms/names of different types of clothing

·  explanation of styles for the time period

·  types of fabric used to make the clothing (if possible)

·  influences on the fashion or how the fashion influenced other aspects of French life

You will write a rough draft by hand to be turned in before typing the final draft of this paper.

The second part is re-creating an outfit from the time period you chose. In order to do this, you will have to trace a paper doll cutout onto a piece of card stock (provided in the classroom) and use construction paper and/or tissue paper and/or ribbons and yarn to “make” the outfit and put it on your cutout. There will be class time given to accomplish this.

Mrs. Uzzell’s web site will have a set of web links you can use to find examples of fashion during different time periods. You can print out a picture to use to guide you in this process.

This project will be worth 100 points. The paper will be 60 points, graded on content, writing style, and grammar/punctuation usage. The outfit will be 40 points, graded on style, creativity, and accuracy.
