The Explorer Program

The Explorer Program is a fun and safe way for teenagers to learn about the field of law enforcement. Explorers participate in Ride Alongs, traffic control, and crowd control, give tours of the Police Department, and do many other exciting activities. This program helps teenagers either develop an understanding of various law enforcement careers, decide whether they want to pursue a career in law enforcement, or both.

Becoming an Explorer

  • You can submit an application for this program during the months of October and March. If you submit an application outside of open enrollment it will be held until the next enrollment period.
  • Mail it to the Fremont Police Department Explorer Post, or drop it off at the Fremont Police Department.
  • Next, an Explorer Staff Member will contact you in order to set up a date for an oral interview followed by a short essay on why you want to become an Explorer.
  • If you are accepted into out Post, an Explorer Staff Member will call or email you to notify within two weeks of you interview date.
  • Attendance to the first three meetings is mandatory.
  • After the first three meetings, you will officially be a Probationary Explorer
  • You must complete a 4-6 month FTO program which will give you both the knowledge and training you need in order to be an Explorer.
  • Upon passing the FTO final, you will be a full-fledged Patrol Explorer.
  • All Explorers are required to attend a one-week Explorer Academy in San Diego their first summer as an Explorer.

Minimum Qualifications

  • You must be at least 14 years old, but no older than 18 years old.
  • You must have an interest in Law Enforcement.
  • You must be enrolled in either high school or college.
  • You must maintain a "C+" grade point average
  • You must demonstrate a good level of responsibility and maturity. A record of criminal violations may be grounds for disqualification from out Post.
  • The Fremont Police Explorer Post has weekly meetings and physical training that you must attend regularly.
  • You must show an interest in learning.

The Fremont Police Explorer Post is a part of the Department-wide Tradition of Excellence. We strive to maintain a professional Post. At the same time, our Post is a melting pot of different people who share an interest in Law Enforcement. The Police Explorers is a great organization that allows teenagers to grow and develop while gaining invaluable experience and knowledge.
