Employment

Intern, Planet Languages

July –Sept 2013

I recently completed a full-time three month internship with Planet Languages in Farnham. This was a fantastic opportunity as it gave me an invaluable insight into how translation agencies function. I was responsible for project management and coordinating with freelance translators and agencies. This ranged from single language combination projects to larger projects of up to sixteen languages. I also completed translation and revision in-house, with my sample being accepted for significant future work by a key client.

Freelance translator, ISTE Publishing Ltd

Dec 2010 – July 2013

I was employed on a freelance basis, translating mathematic and scientific text books from French into English. This provided me with a great opportunity to gain experience as a published translator. I completed ten projects totalling around 70,000 plus words. These projects included texts from fields such as structural mechanics and mechanical engineering.

Education

MA Translation and Interpreting Studies, The University of Manchester

2010 – 2012

I completed my masters’ studies over two years and specifically focused my course around technical translation through modules on scientific and technical translation, commercial translation and CAT technology such SDL Trados. My final dissertation focused on industry expectations of translators and the relationship between agents in the translation process in relation to the translation of a technical text book from French into English.

A Middle Eastern and a Modern European Language BA Hons;French and Arabic: 2:1, The University of Manchester

2006–2010

I really enjoyed my undergraduate degree and took modules in a variety of subjects ranging from linguistics to translation. This included translating literary and journalistic texts from French as well as poetry, novels and journalistic pieces from Arabic. I also studied the translation of Medieval and Middle French texts which also gave a great insight into modern French and its use today. I also had the fantastic opportunity to live and study in Alexandria, Egypt and Lyon, France during my year abroad which was a challenging but unforgettable and amazing experience!

Other Employment

Voluntary Translator, Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group, The University of Liverpool

August 2010

I carried out voluntary translations of medical journalsfrom French into English, dealing with comparisons of medicinal drugs for use by medical professionals in the UK.This was a fantastic chance to put my translation skills into practice for a good cause. It was also challenging as this work often required dealing with unfamiliar medical topics such as epidural analgesia.

I have a passion for fitness and enjoy training around four to five times a week. This mostly involves weight training although I also really love being outdoors and running. I even recently completed a 10k charity run! I have a really sweet tooth so I love finding and creating healthy alternatives to my favourite treats!
