Developmental Sociobiology Lab

University of Oregon

(541) 346-3500

The Developmental Sociobiology Lab is interested in recruiting highly motivated, conscientious individuals who are interested in gaining direct research experience. Our research focuses on psychological, social, and neurobiological processes that shape very young children’s development - both prenatally and during the first few years of life. We are particularly interested in how early family processes become embedded in the neurobiological systems that support emotion regulation and which, over time, foster positive outcomes or to place children at risk for problems in adaptation.

What would I do as a Research Assistant: Research Assistants work closely with Dr. Jennifer Ablow, Dr. Jeffery Measelle and graduate students in the lab on ongoing projects. Research Assistants participate in all facets of the research process, with the possibility of responsibilities gradually increasing with demonstrated interest and competence. Research activities may include training in the data processing, participation in the observation and assessment of mother-infant interaction, exposure to research techniques used to assess the quality of attachment relationships, transcription of complex clinical interviews, data coding, entering, and/or analysis, participating in laboratory meetings, conducting library searches, and reading written materials (journal articles, book chapters, etc.) regarding the research topic. In addition to the work that research assistants do on specific research projects, they may be also required to contribute to the maintenance of the lab (e.g., entry of articles into Endnote, cleaning, copying articles, filing, answering phones, maintaining the web site) and to attend a weekly lab research meeting.

Preferred qualifications: Students need to be willing to make at least a two-term commitment of at least 2-3 credit hours per term (6-9 hours per week).

This is a great opportunity to become part of an active and growing lab, and to see what research is really like. It can even lead to an Honors (or Honors College ) thesis project! Responsible and interested students are asked to complete the attached application and turn it in at the Psychology Department Office. Please ask that it be put in the Developmental Sociobiology Lab mailbox.

Our needs for RA's change from term to term, so even if we can't use you one term, we will keep your application for consideration for other terms.
