Students of Lafayette Parish School System participated in the Martin Luther King Jr “Holiday Committee” events that convened at the Martin Luther King Recreation Center on Monday, January 21, 2013. The Holiday Committee had three events for the students to compete in before the January 21st celebration.

Elementary students in grades 1-5 were invited to compete in the annual poster contest. LPSS student’s artwork depicted the life and dream Dr. King had for all American. Students work included various aspects of the lime and times of Dr. King and was judged on originality, imaginative content, skill/techniques and creativity. Schools that participated were asked to pick three posters from each grade level to enter the parish competition. All posters were displayed at the MLK Center, Clifton Chenier Center and other sites where commemorative activities were held in honor of Dr. King.

Middle School students in grades 7-8 were asked to write an essay of Martin Luther King Jr “Living the Dream”. The students based their essays upon their research and/or personal opinion. Essays were judged on content, originality, grammar and neatness. Schools were asked to pick three essays from each grade level to enter the parish competition.

In conjunction with other activities Paul Breaux and Carencro Middle Schools competed the day of the “Holiday Committee” events in a Quiz Bowl competition that focused on the life and times of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s life. Each middle school team consisted of four members and one alternate from grades 6, 7 and 8th grade. Faculty members from Paul Breaux and Carencro Middle served as a sponsor of each team. The MLK Quiz Bowl Committee provided each team with materials to prepare for the competition.
