Fourth Grade Promotion Requirements

In order to be promoted to fifth grade, students are expected to reach benchmark levels in the following areas:

STUDENT EXPECTATION: Pass TAKS Readingand Math Tests.

ORAL READING FLUENCY: Students should be reading on fourth grade level at a minimum of 120words per minute.

The DIBELS reading inventory is used with fourth graders at China Elementary. Students are expected to meet benchmark standards on this test. Information about this test can be found on the China Elementary webpage under Staff Webpages/ ELI/ Literacy Helps. You may also find additional information about helping your child with reading at .

MATH: Students are expected maintain fluency from previous grades: addition and subtraction facts (to and from 18) by memory, 20 facts in 45 seconds. Students are also expected to know their multiplication and division facts to 10by memory, 20 multiplication or division facts in 1 minute. This fluency will allow students more freedom to concentrate on problem-solving strategies without having to stop and recall these basic facts.

4th GRADE ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS TEKS

Listening and Speaking Goals: Students will be able to:

  • Listen with purpose of gaining information, solving problems, and appreciating the text.
  • Analyze and evaluate a speaker’s message to determine purposes, perspectives, and persuasive techniques.
  • Listen to proficient, fluent models of oral reading to enjoy the tone of the message.
  • Listen and speak to gain and share knowledge of his/her own culture and other cultures.
  • Speak appropriately to different audiences for a variety of purposes such as stories, poems, or plays.

Reading Goals: Students will be able to:

  • Use a variety of word recognition strategies to understand word meanings.
  • Read fluently on grade level with few mistakes silently as well as aloud.
  • Read for different purposes using a variety of materials.
  • Develop an extensive vocabulary through reading and systematic word study.
  • Use his/her own knowledge and experience to summarize, distinguish fact and opinion, draw inferences, find cause and effect, compare and contrast texts, make visualizations of the reading material.
  • Answer different types of questions using various formats.
  • Express and support responses to various types of texts by connecting, comparing and contrasting various ideas across the text.
  • Recognize the characteristics of a variety of literary forms.
  • Analyze characters, plot, setting, problemresolution, and the author’s point of view.
  • Inquire and conduct research using a variety of sources.
  • Increase knowledge of cultures by discussing connections and themes that cross cultures.

Writing Goals: Students will be able to:

  • Write for a variety of purposes such as: expressive/narrative, informative/descriptive, informative/narrative, informative/classificatory, and persuasive/descriptive.
  • Write for a variety of audiences and purposes such as to compose humorous poems, short stories, journals, letters, reviews, and instructions.
  • Exhibit an identifiable voice in personal narratives and stories.
  • Compose original texts using proper capitalization, punctuation, and legible penmanship to communicate clearly.
  • Spell proficiently using syllable constructions, root words, prefixes, and suffixes in final drafts.
  • Use various resources to find correct spellings.
  • Apply all parts of speech to communicate clearly and effectively in writing.
  • Apply standard grammar such as complete, compound, and complex sentences, using apostrophes in contractions, and possessives, as well as using objective case pronouns.

Writing goals continued:

  • Use computer technology such as, word processing, spelling and grammar check, and print to create and publish texts.
  • Generate ideas and organize plans for writing using brainstorming, maps, and graphic organizers.
  • Edit and revise his/her own writing and other through proofreading, to ensure grammatical correctness, coherence, and logical support of ideas.
  • Evaluate his/her own writings and the writing of others in a constructive way, as well as evaluate if the writing achieved its purpose.
  • Analyze published examples of writings as examples and discuss its weaknesses and strengths.
  • Use writing as a tool for learning and research such as producing graphic organizers, and taking notes from various sources.
  • Present information using various media as well as evaluate his/her own research.
  • Interact with other writers through various media to compose, organize and revise various types of texts.

Viewing and RepresentingGoals: Students will be able to:

  • Interpret and understand visual images, messages, and meanings such as maps, charts, and technology presentations.
  • Analyze and critique print, visuals, and electronic media to compare and contrast with the written story.
  • Produce communications using technology or appropriate media that communicate meaning to others in an organized manner.

4th GRADE MATHEMATICS TEKS

Numbers and Operations Goals: Students will be able to:

  • Use place and value to read, write, compare and order whole numbers the millions place and decimals involving tenths and hundredths.
  • Generate equivalent fractions, model, compare and order fractions and relate decimals to fractions that name tenths and hundredths.
  • Add and subtract whole numbers and decimals to the hundredths to solve problems.
  • Use two-digit multipliers and one-digit divisors to solve problems.
  • Round whole numbers through the thousands to approximate reasonable results and estimate product or quotient beyond basic facts.

Patterns, Relationships, and Algebraic Thinking Goals: Students will be able to:

  • Use patterns to multiply and divide.
  • Describe the relationship between two sets of related data such as ordered pairs in a table.
  • Identify prime factors and common factors.

Geometry and Spatial Reasoning Goals: Students will be able to:

  • Identify acute, right and obtuse angles and model parallel and perpendicular lines.
  • Describe shapes and solids in terms of vertices, edges and faces.
  • Demonstrate and use translations, reflections, and rotations to verify congruency and symmetry.
  • Locate and name points on a number line using whole numbers, decimals and standard fractions.

Measurement Goals: Students will be able to:

  • Estimate and measure weight and capacity to solve problems

Probability and Statistics Goals: Students will be able to:

  • List possible outcomes and everyone favorable outcomes of a probability experiment.
  • Interpret bar graphs

Underlying Processes and Mathematical Tools Goals: Students will be able to:

  • Select or develop and use an appropriate problem-solving strategy with tools and manipulative to solve problems.
  • Explain and record observations relating informal language to mathematical language and symbols
  • Make generalizations from patterns or sets of examples justifying and explaining the reasonableness of the answer.

4th GRADE SCIENCE TEKS

Scientific Processes Goals: Students will be able to:

  • Understand Scientific Inquiry.
  • Demonstrate safe practices during the field and lab investigations.
  • Construct graphs, charts, and tables to organize and evaluate information.
  • Collect information by observing and measuring using customary and metric units.
  • Recognize and explain cause and effect relationships; predicting outcomes.
  • Evaluate the impact of research on scientific thought, history of science, and contributions of scientists.
  • Collect and analyze information using a variety of scientific tools.

Science Concepts Goals: Students will be able to:

  • Identify and describe roles of organisms in living and nonliving.
  • Identify and predict recognizable patterns.
  • Understand rotation, translation, and reflection to objects. Use reflection to verify symmetry.
  • Classify matter in relation to physical properties.
  • Identify kinds of species in the past, comparing to existing species, and characteristics that allow members to survive and reproduce.
  • Test properties of soils. (texture, capacity to retain water, and ability to support life.

4thGRADE SOCIAL STUDIES TEKS

History Goals: Students will be able to:

  • Identify Native American groups in Texas before European exploration.
  • Identify the causes and the effects of European exploration and colonization of Texas and the Western Hemisphere.
  • Describe the individuals, events, and issues that shaped the history of early Texas before 1845.
  • Summarize the political, economic, and social changes brought about by the Civil War and Reconstruction in Texas.
  • Explain the impact of 20th century issues, events, and individuals upon Texas.

GeographyGoals: Students will be able to:

  • Describe the relationships between people, places, and the environment and describe their impact upon the development of geographic patterns (population and economic) in Texas.
  • Compare and contrast the various types of geographic (human and physical) regions in Texas with regions of the United States and other parts of the world.

Economics Goals: Students will be able to:

  • Explain how people organized economic systems for the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services in both early and Modern Texas.
  • Describe the development of the free enterprise system in Texas, how it works, and its benefits

Government Goals: Students will be able to:

  • Identify and explain the duty of each of the three branches of state government.
  • Identify and summarize major historical documents

Citizenship Goals: Students will be able to:

  • Identify leaders in state and local government.
  • Explain the role of the individual in state and local elections.
  • Explain the rights and responsibilities of Texas citizens.

Culture Goals: Students will be able to:

  • Summarize the contributions of various racial, ethnic, and religious groups.

Science, Technology, and Society Goals: Students will be able to:

  • Describe the impact of science and technology on life in Texas.

Social Studies Skills Goals: Students will be able to:

  • Interpret, organize, and use social studies data from a variety of sources.
  • Communicate social studies skills effectively in written, oral, and visual forms.
  • Work independently and in groups to solve problems and make decisions in a variety of settings.
