Four-Way Test Promotion

For School Students in Grades 7 and 8

R U L E S

The Four-Way Test Essay Contest is a two-phase contest. In the first phase, the students write essays and submit them in the contest sponsored by the local Rotary Club which will select first, second, and third place winners of the local contest and will provide them with awards of $25, $15, and $10or more respectively.In the second phase, the local Rotary Club submits the essay of its first place winner to the Chairman of the Four-Way Test Committee of District 7710.The District Committee will select first, second and third place winners of the district contest and will provide them with awards of $150, $75 and $50, respectively.

Eligibility:Contestants qualify for participation in the Four-Way Test Essay Contest sponsored by the local Rotary club(s) by being currently enrolled in grade seven or eight in public or private schools in District 7710 of Rotary International.

Contestants qualify for participation in the Four-Way Test Essay Contest of Rotary District 7710 by being selected by the sponsoring Rotary club(s) as the first place winner of the local Four-Way Test Essay Contest.

Entry Requirements: To enter the Four-Way Test Essay Contest sponsored by the local Rotary Club(s), the contestant must write an original essay reflecting his or her thinking on the Four-Way Test and must submit it, along with a completed entry form, to the sponsoring Rotary Club(s) on or before November 14th.

The essay must meet the following requirements:

The essay must contain three hundred (300) words or less.

The essay may either be typed (*preferred*) or hand written.

The essay must appear on only one (1) side of plain (unlined)

white 8 ½x11 (letter size) paper.

There must be no name, comment or other mark on the paper.

Only one (1) essay per contestant may be submitted.

The essay may not have been entered in any other contest.

To enter the Four-Way Test Essay Contest sponsored by Rotary District 7710, the contestant must have won first place in the local Rotary contest with his or her essay and that essay, along with the completed entry form, must be submitted by the sponsoring local Rotary club(s) to the Chairman of the Four-Way Test Committee of District 7710, Martin Tetreault.

Only one essay may be submitted in the District Contest by a local club or group of clubs which sponsor one contest.No essay will be considered for the District Contest which has not been previously designated as the essay which won first place in a local club contest.

Criteria for Selecting Winning Essays: Each essay will be evaluated by volunteer judgesfrom local clubs in accordance with the following criteria, which are listed in order of importance:first, what is expressed—originality of thought (the presentation of fresh, insightful and stimulating ideas), and second, how the thought is presented—style (effective use of language).
