Children are familiar with the idea that communities share in special times and celebrations. /
  • Use produce to discuss and relate to creation.
  • Link to farming.
  • Tell story of The Little Red Hen. Use drama, music, art, ICT, story sequencing / captions.
  • Discuss sharing and importance of saying Thank You for Gods gifts.
  • Talk about what happens in the church / school as a celebration of Harvest.
  • Link to whole school chosen charity e.g. Trussell Trust.

  • Watch video ‘Festivals’ or similar visual resource to introduce the culture.
  • Tell the Rama & Sita story, use drama & art.
  • Decorate classroom with colourful banners, include chalk Rangoli patterns on ground outside.
  • Mendhi designs on paper or use kented.org website – see resources.
  • Learn songs eg. Video booklet p. 6. & use instruments.
  • Dandia Raas – stick dancing.
  • Link to Light – shadow puppets, clay diva lamps.
  • Invite speaker/parents e.g. Demi Ladwa / Rahi Bains-see resources.
  • Taste Indian foods, look at fashion.

Term 3: Chinese New Year

Children are familiar with the idea that communities share in special times and celebrations. /
  • Watch video ‘Festivals’ or similar resource to introduce the culture.
  • Tell the story of Chinese New Year.
  • Talk about the animal of the current year and the year pupils were born.
  • Decorate the classroom, download banners from sparklebox – see resources. Make lanterns.
  • Model Chinese writing, pupils copy.
  • Chinese Restaurant in role play area – Discuss food, write menus, taste food.
  • Make dragon’s head / mask for parade & small concertina dragons.
  • Learn song e.g. from Music Express.
  • Listen to Chinese music (Music Express) select instruments, create dance with Chinese dragon, perform.
  • Download ‘Lucky Money’ -Kented.org & pupils make envelopes & money.
