"FOUND" VOCABULARY

This quarter we will be creating unique, one-of-a-kind, specially tailored vocab lists—no more “one size fits all” list. In addition to the vocabulary you learn/use in class for literature, informational text, and writing, you will expand your vocabulary outside of school!

  1. Every two or three weeks, you will be responsible for logging 10 new “found”words as follows:
  2. 7 words can be from any category you choose (noun, adjective, adverb, etc.)
  3. 3 words MUST BE VERBS!
  1. You can find the words in the literature we read, but you may also find them in music, television, shows, movies, etc.
  1. Your vocabulary test will ask you to know:
  2. Definition or synonyms
  3. How to use the word in context
  4. The word’s part of speech
  5. How to create a short writing using some or all of the words

Rules for Finding Words

  1. Must be school appropriate
  2. Must be higher-level vocabulary (NO words like car, cat, blue, red, walk, talk, etc.)
  3. Examples of higher-level vocabulary - cantankerous, abominable, mitigate, galvanize

You will keep track of words in your classroom journal. The journal will also act as a study guide for the test. Follow the sample below to as your build your list.

You will also log your words into a “master list” so you aren't using the same words multiple times during the course of the year

Your first vocabulary test is on: 8/15

Creating your Vocabulary Journal:

  1. Find and mark a word we read in a text or in another context.
  2. Write the word in your journal (on the master list and as an entry)
  3. Complete a Vocabulary Entry:

Based off the passage I think intemperate means that someone is never happy.

Synonyms: immoderate, excessive, undue, inordinate, extreme, unrestrained, / Your Own Sentence
My two-year-old sister is often intemperate when she doesn’t get her way; she throws a tantrum and can only be soothed with gallons of chocolate milk.
