Job Title: Part Time Youth Worker – Youth Matters Project

Responsible to:Forthspring Board of Directors

Hours of work: 20 hours per week (will require work at evenings and possibly weekends)

Holidays:25 days annual leave plus statutory days pro rata

Salary: NJC scale pt.20 £19,430 p.a., pro rata (£11,102.86 p.a.)

This is a fixed term post to 31st of October 2020 funded through the Children in Need fund.

Aim of the Project:

The Youth Matters Project aims to:

  • Support local children and young people to develop and sustain meaningful relationships and friendships with their peers on both sides of the interface on a daily basis in this uniquely shared facility
  • Formally and informally educate children and young people to learn the consequences of negative risk taking behaviour and support them to make more positive choices in their lives
  • Support children and young people to grow in emotional resilience and to be aware of and feel empowered to take up the range of supports that exist in relation to mental health and self harm

The Youth Matters Project will

  • Deliver a full range of centre based, detached and outreach youth provision and activities based on identified needs and set aims.
  • Engage with young people in citizenship, personal and social development programmes in relation to; emotional resilience, positive choices, good relations, good mental health as well as targeting specific issues impacting young people.
  • Provide a youth drop in centre for a range of ages.
  • Assist young people with accessing appropriate support agencies, education, training and employment agencies.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Youth Workeris employed as part of a youth work team to deliver the Youth Matters project and to help deliver the Vision, Mission and Aims of Forthspring within the Youth Matters project.

1.Work within the youth team in the planning, implementation and delivery of the overall Youth Matters project within Forthspring.

2.Assist in identifying the key issues that affect young people who live in an interface area.

3.Assist to identify project participants and the key locations were young people assemble.

4.Make contact with young people who do not engage in mainstream centre based youth provision/ cross community youth provision

5.Explore the role of the Peace wall in separating communities and looking at other global examples of segregated living and its consequences, encouraging an advocacy approach amongst young people on interface issues.

6.Assist in the delivery of projects that combat prejudice including sectarianism and racism

7.Assist in the development and delivery of appropriate personal and social development as well ascitizenship programmes which target key issues impacting children and young people.

8.Undertake a minimum of4 evening sessions per week which include outreach and centre based provision.

9.Assist in the delivery of residential programmes for young people

10. Provide mentoring and support services for children and young people

11. Support and promote young peoples participation within the planning and delivery of the programme

12.Represent Forthspring Youth Matters Project and young people at relevant networks, forums and conferences and events.

14.Any other duties as deemed appropriate

Reporting and Evaluation

  1. To continually record, monitor and evaluate the programme, analyse feedback and respond accordingly
  1. Maintain a high standard of records in relation to the programme and funding requirements.
  1. Attendstaff meetings, line management meetings, youth team meetings, AGM, and any other appropriate internal meeting.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

1)Minimum of OCN level3 qualification in youth work.

2)Minimum of one years recent experience in youth work

3)An awareness and knowledge of issues impacting on Children and Young People.

4)An understanding and a minimum of one years recent experience in detached and outreach.

5)An awareness and knowledge of interface issues.

6)Minimum one years experience in community relations youth work.

7)To enjoy working with young people.

8)A commitment to the ethos of cross community work and equal opportunities.

9)Experience in delivery of group work facilitation.

10)Experience of one to one and mentoring work.

11)Ability and experience in carrying out regular office and administration tasks, including, experience in carrying out evaluation, recording and monitoring tasks.

12)To be in general good health.

13)Willingness to work evenings and weekends.

14)A commitment to the Vision of Forthspring: of a diverse, vibrant and flourishing neighbourhood where people feel secure, confident and positive about their future.

Desirable Criteria

1)Third level qualification in Youth Work

2)Accredited training in relation to mentoring and/ or mental health
