ABOUT SATURDAY SCHOOL FOR SCHOLARS & LEADERS AT FORSYTH COUNTY/ LAMBERT HIGH SCHOOL

We have expanded our Saturday School for Scholars and Leaders program to Forsyth County at Lambert High School! Saturday is not your usual day for school, and the participants in Saturday School program are not usual students. Our wide variety of enrichmentclasses are designed to challengeparticipants, K-8th grade. All classes are held on the Lambert High School campus under the supervision of the Department of Early Childhood Education and the Lambert High School administration.Thediverse curriculum is structured to offer educational opportunities emphasizingleadership, scholarship and cultural awareness.

Application Process

Saturday School for Scholars and Leaders is designed to meet the educational needs of gifted and talented children. Students may either receive Provisional or Full admission.

Provisional Admission is offered to all students for 1 year. Students receiving provisional admission may register for classes, but have one year from the date of initial application to provide evidence of meeting the admission criteria. Students who do not provide this evidence within the year time limit will not be allowed to remain in the program.

Full Admission to the program requires meeting the specific criteria for admission at the time of first application. In order to receive full admission, all students must have:

  • Test Scores indicating a 90th percentile or above on a nationally normed ability or achievement test, or an IQ of 120 or above.
  • A recommendation by school personnel or the testing psychologist.
  • The recommendation and test scores must be submitted with the application and fee payment. All four components must be received before applicants can be admitted.

Students who have attended previous Saturday School sessions do not have toresubmit testscores and recommendations.

Tuition Fee

The cost per class is $175 (i.e. if you register for a morning and afternoon class, it is double). This fee is to be paid in advance by check or money order (made payable to Georgia State University), or by charge card (Visa or MasterCard). Please note that a 15% discount is available to Faculty, Alumni and Students of GSU. Only one discount may be applied per class.

Registration/Cancellation Deadline

All applications must be received by April 3, 2014. You are encouraged to submit applications before the deadline. Applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Please include two alternative choices because not every course listed in this brochure will be held due to minimum enrollment requirements. An application will be considered incomplete if all choices are not provided. If the preferred course is not available you will be automatically enrolled in the second or third choice. If all three of your choices are not available someone will contact you. Cancellations must be received in writing by the registration deadline,April 3, 2014, in order to receive a full refund, (minus a $25 processing fee). For stop payments, there will be a returned check fee of $25. Please allow up to six weeks to receive a check refund. There will be no partial refunds after the deadline or for missed classes.

Acceptance Confirmation

Confirmation letters will be mailed about ten days prior to the beginning of the session. Please feel free to call us if you wish to confirm earlier. Late registrations will not receive a confirmation letter and may call for a confirmation.

Photo Release

By completing the registration form, parents give permission to the Saturday School for Scholars and Leaders program, to take photos and videos of their child(ren) for use in the program’s promotional activities and on the program’s website.

DEBATE! (AM, PM, M & U)
Students will learn the principles of formal debate in Lincoln Douglas (1 on 1) and Public Forum (2 on 2) styles. By practicing the process of gathering evidence, developing reasoned responses, and arguing from both sides of a proposition, students will develop poise, confidence, and public speaking skills which will carry over into many other academic areas. GETTING FIT IN THE KITCHEN (AM, PM, U)
Before heading to the field, the court, or the track; come learn about the importance of nutrition as it relates to personal health, diet, exercise, and lifestyle. This class will cover food safety and sanitation, food groups, essential nutrients, nutrition requirements, product labeling, exercise, and healthy lifestyle habits. Each class will end with hands on cooking and eating experience in our test kitchens. Instructor: Chris Bestor (Teacher, Food Science & Nutrition, Lambert High School) Upper (6, 7 & 8)

HANDS ON MATH! (PM, M & U)
This course is designed to make mathematics real to young students through the use of fun activities. These activities are focused on teaching students how to apply math in their everyday life. We will examine properties of geometric figures as they exist in our world. As the students explore the properties of parallelograms, triangles, and solids they will learn how to apply these concepts to work math problems in the classroom. Student activities include the use of hands on learning tools such as balls, tubes, boxes, triangles, ice cream cones, potato chip cans, and other common household items. My goal is to teach the students geometry while making it fun and show them how it is used every day. Instructor: Andra Cruse, E.D. INTRODUCTION TO CAMERA TRICKS (AM, M & U)
Get Ready to Learn...This course covers in camera tricks in photography. Students will learn how to use their cameras to shrink others, defy gravity, and make filters. Students should come to class with a digital/phone camera and a smile. Instructor: David Smith (Audio, Video, and Film Technology, Lambert High School) Middle (4 & 5) Upper (6, 7 & 8)

LET'S GET WET AND WILD - DISCOVERING WATER (AM, PM, M & U)
Students will explore the physical and chemical properties of water, investigate stream ecosystem, learn protocols for water quality testing, identify aquatic organisms, and discover the importance of water for health and wellbeing of organisms. The course will be activity based utilizing Project Wet, Project Wild Aquatic, and Adopt-a- Stream materials. Instructor: Huldie Hudson (Science Teacher Lambert High School) Middle (4 & 5) Upper (6, 7 & 8)

MATH AND SCIENCE DAY TO DAY (AM, M & U)
Students will learn how to use math and science in their everyday life. We will learn how to apply our math skills to our day to day life using fun stuff like puzzles, games and math labs with cookies, m & m’s and bubble gum! I will include things like buying groceries and looking at check books. Math and science go hand and hand and students will do science labs learning to measure, graph and use the scientific method. We will examine the cell and it’s parts, delve into some fun genetics and explore the outdoor classroom. My goal will be to show each student how fun math and science can be and how it is part of their life! Instructor: Carmon Schmitt, M.Ed. SPORTS SCIENCE (AM, U)
This will be an inquiry-based science course in which students will design experiments to test different sports related questions. For example, how does playing football in the rain effect how far or how accurate the ball can be thrown or kicked? How much does sliding into home plate slow you down? How much further an aluminum bat will hit a baseball than a wooden bat? These are all questions that we will try to answer by designing our own experiment and collecting data to find the answers. Each class we will design and execute an experiment based on a sport. Do you love sports? Do you love science? This is for you!
