ThunderBolts sweep Crushers

The Windy City ThunderBolts scored eight times in the second inning en route to a 13-6 thrashing and a series sweep over the Lake Erie Crushers.

For the second straight game, Lake Erie jumped on the ThunderBolts starter, this time Tyler Kelsey, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning, the big shot an RBI double from Wayne Bond.

Windy City came right back in the bottom half of the frame as Gilberto Mejia and Guillermo Martinez singled to start the inning. After Mike Sullivan reached on a fielder’s choice that scored Mejia, J.T. Restko came up and doubled down the leftfield line, scoring Sullivan and cutting the Lake Erie lead to 4-2.

The two runs in the first inning were just a drop in the bucket for the Windy City offense. The ThunderBolts exploded in the second inning for eight runs, highlighted by a pair of three run homers off the bats of Mike Sullivan and Nate Hall. For Sullivan, the homer extended his hitting streak to seven games this season and 13 dating back to last year. In the case of Hall it was a momentous shot as it was his first professional homerun.

The Bolts added a couple more in the third inning on an RBI double from Bryan Cook and an RBI single from Nate Hall to go up 12-4. Windy City would add a run in the seventh and the Crushers would plate a pair in the eighth on an Andrew Davis homerun to create the final margin.

Tyler Kelsey (1-0) pitched six strong innings for the victory for the ThunderBolts. Josh Faiola (0-1) struggled as he took the loss for Lake Erie. Offensively, Nate Hall went 3-for-4 with four RBI for Windy City and J. T. Restko had a pair of doubles and two RBI for the Bolts.

Windy City now heads to the road for six games at Midwest and Lake Erie. All three games in the Midwest series will be aired on 88.3 FM, WXAV.
