Department of Public Safety Announces Fourth

Citizen and Clergy Academy May 10th

Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose announces that the fourth class of the Department of Public Safety’s Citizen/Clergy Academy will begin at 6 p.m., Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at 311 Washington Street.

Participants in the 7-week course will learn the basic functions and operations of the Police and Fire divisions as well as the Office of Emergency Management (OEM). Students will also be given a glimpse into the training, operations and organization of the Police Division, with insights offered into deployment decisions, the operations of the dispatch center and how calls for service are prioritized.

The training will also include presentations on crime prevention, gang awareness, domestic violence issues and “a day-in-the-life of a Newark Police Officer.”

The Fire Division will provide classes on fire escape plans and arson investigations and will teach students how to properly use a fire extinguisher. Demonstrations of the Fire Division’s equipment will also be given. Students will also learn how OEM responds in various catastrophic emergency situations and will be exposed to some of the agency’s most advanced equipment.

“The Citizen/Clergy Academy is a great way to help community members understand how different facets of the Department of Public Safety operate,” Director Ambrose said. “The course will allow concerned citizens to become active partners in our efforts to eliminate crime while inviting them into the world of police officers, firefighters and emergency management personnel.”

Star-Ledger columnist Barry Carter featured the last Citizen-Clergy Academy class experience in his March 31st, 2017 article titled, “Newark residents find police work difficult and deadly.” In the article, academy participants spoke of the challenges they faced when put in shoot-don’t-shoot scenarios using the Newark Police Division’s Firearms Training System, the same equipment used for training police.

People interested in taking the course may sign-up online at: www.newarkpdonline.org in the forms and reports tab, or by contacting the Department’s Community/ Clergy Affairs Unit at (973) 877-9552 or (973) 877-9550.
