YWCA Celebrates First Woman President

YWCA USA is happy to be celebrating the first woman president of the United States. We have worked for women’s empowerment for nearly 160 years and truly know how women’s leadership can change history. These firsts truly matter. When Helen Claytor became the first African-American president of YWCA USA in 1967, she led change for our organization. It’s no surprise that in 1970 we adopted the One Imperative to eliminate racism wherever it exists and by any means necessary – work that continues today at the center of our mission.

“We look forward to seeing how this historic moment will impact not only our nation’s history, but the dreams and ambitions of women and girls across the country,” said Dara Richardson-Heron, M.D., CEO of YWCA USA, “Truly, we are building a future where nothing is off-limits to them.”

YWCA USA is already preparing to work with the next White House administration and Congress on the issues that matter most to the 2.3 million women and families we help each year. We have worked for change since 1858 when James Buchanan was the President of United States and we are eager to continue this legacy in 2017 and beyond.

Moreover, we look forward to working alongside 220 YWCAs in 47 states and the District of Columbia to continue doing what we’ve always done – fighting to eliminate racism, empower women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.

YWCA is on a mission to eliminate racism, empower women, stand up for social justice, help families, and strengthen communities. YWCA Association Name is part of an international movement serving over 2 million in the United States and 25 million worldwide.
