2011 SVU Awards Presented at the SVU Annual Conference in Chicago

LANHAM, MD, June 22, 2011 -- The Society for Vascular Ultrasound (SVU) presented the following awards at the SVU Annual Conference during the 2011Vascular Annual Meeting, June 16-18, 2011 in Chicago, IL.

SCIENTIFIC AWARDS

The 2011D.E. Strandness, MD, Scientific Award for Excellence in Vascular Research was presented to Robert Scissons, RVT FSVU, Technical Director, Jobst Vascular Institute Laboratory, Toledo, OH, for his paper on "Should Carotid Duplex Velocity Thresholds be Modified for Patients Undergoing Computerized Tomographic (CT) Angiography?" This annual award,sponsored this year by Parks Medical Electronics, is in honor of the “Father of Noninvasive Diagnosis”, D.E.Strandness, MD, who died in 2002.

ORAL CLINICAL PRESENTATION AWARD

R. Patrick DeMuth, BS ThM RVT, Technical Director, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, TX received the 2011Excellence in Oral ClinicalPresentation Awardfor his scientific paper on “Clinical Significance of Standing vs. Reversed Trendelenburg Position for the Diagnosis of Lower Extremity Venous Reflux in the Greater Saphenous Vein.”This award was sponsored by Navix Diagnostix, Inc.

PHYSICIAN PRESENTER AWARD

George A. Carty, MD RVT RPVI RPhS, of Progressive Medical Imaging, Saginaw, MI, received the 2011 Physician Presenter Awardfor his paper on "Standing Versus Supine Evaluation for Superficial Venous Reflux: Dispositional or Core Belief?." This award was sponsored byPhilips Healthcare.

FIRST TIME PRESENTER AWARD

The recipient of the 2011First Time Presenter Award is Renee Croft, RVT of Henry Ford Health System, Detroit, MI, for her paper on "Is Pre-Operative Vein Mapping Beneficial for Creation of Dialysis Arteriovenous Fistulas?" This award was sponsored by Pegasus Lectures, Inc.

EXCELLENCE IN SCIENTIFIC POSTER PRESENTATION AWARD

EXCELLENCE IN CLINICAL CASE STUDY POSTER PRESENTATION AWARD

Amber Clay, RVT RDCS of the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center, Ann Arbor, MI, received the 2011Clinical Case Study Poster Presentation Awardfor her poster on "Duplex Diagnosis of Penetrating Aortic Ulcers: Case Studies." This award was sponsored by DataStar Systems.

2011SVU SERVICE AWARDS

The following SVU members received the following service awards:

DistinguishedService Award: Presented to Patricia (Tish) A. Poe, BA RVT RDCS FSVU, Director, Noninvasive Vascular Lab Services, Division of Vascular Surgery, University of Cincinnati Physicians, Cincinnati, OH, for her hard work as Meetings Subcommittee Chair for six years (2004-2009), for her dedicated service on the SVU Board of Directors for 6 years (2004-2009), for being Board Vice President for two years (2010-2011), and for being on the faculty of numerous SVU education programs.

Professional Achievement Awards: Recipients are Anne M. Jones, RN BSN RVT RDMS FSVU of Winston-Salem, NC, for her long-term commitment to research of stroke in sickle cell disease and extensive educational efforts in neurosonology; and Marsha Neumyer, BS RVT FSVU FSDMS FAIUM of Harrisburg, PA, for her many contributions to SVU and the vascular ultrasound profession for many years. This award was sponsored by GE Healthcare.

Certificate of Appreciation Awards:

Frank Miele, MSEE, President, Pegasus Lectures, Inc.– for his long-time support of SVU and the vascular community as an author, educator, lecturer and designer. His books, manuals, videos, CDs and DVDs have assisted many technologists/sonographers and physicians to advance their knowledge and understanding of vascular technology, especially vascular physics.

Peter Moscovita, Unetixs Vascular Inc. – for his and Martine’s unwavering and dedicated support of SVU and the vascular ultrasound profession over the years at SVU Annual Conferences, various SVU regional educational programs, or chapter meetings.

William “Billy” Zang, BS RDMS RVT FSVU, GE Healthcare – for his tremendous support in coordinating the provision of GE vascular ultrasound equipment used at SVU’s Annual Conference tutorials and regional education courses.

The recipient of the 2011 Affiliated Chapter of the Year Award certificate is CAVA (Chicago Area Vascular Association), President Jaime M. Rodriguez, BS RVT.

Two 2011 SVU Affiliated ChapterRecognition Awards–Presented to Oregon Tech Vascular Association (OTVA), at the Oregon Institute of Technology, Klamath Falls, OR, and Philadelphia Regional Vascular Student Chapter (PRVSC) at Thomas Jefferson University, Jefferson College of Health Professions, Philadelphia, PA.

FIVE NEW SVU FELLOWS ANNOUNCED AT 2011 SVU ANNUAL CONFERENCE

Fellows Subcommittee Chair Tish Poe, BA RVT RDCS FSVU, announced the selection of five new SVU Fellows for 2011. Fellows are SVU members recognized for their many outstanding contributions to the Society as well as to the vascular ultrasound profession. They are considered a unique resource for the Society in terms on promoting the benefits of SVU membership to others in the vascular ultrasound profession, and in supporting the many efforts of the Society. There are now 73 SVU Fellows.
