9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Residence Halls Open

New students move into their residence halls.

A traffic flow change will be made on Huguelet Drive on the UK campus Aug. 11, 17, 18 and 19, to accommodate students moving back to campus. Huguelet Drive will be utilized as a one-way street heading west. UK Police will take control of the street at approximately 7:45 a.m., and a police officer will be stationed at each entrance of Huguelet to answer questions and direct traffic.

3 – 5 p.m. Multicultural First-Year Focus Orientation

(Grand Ballroom, StudentCenter) Students and parents are introduced to Multicultural Affairs staff, receive information on services and activities, discuss strategies that facilitate success in college, and meet other students. For more information, call (859) 3236347.

10– 10:50 a.m. Campus Safety Information Session

(211 Student Center) Representatives from a number of campus offices will offer important information to keep students safe in the residence hallsand around campus.

11 – 11:50 a.m. Common Cents: Money Management for College Students

(Center Theater, StudentCenter) Students learn to manage money and avoid the pitfalls of debt.

11:30 a.m. – 12:20 p.m. “In Our Own Voices”

(Worsham Theater, Student Center) “In Our Own Voices” is a theatrical, multimedia program that personalizes the issue of violence against women by sharing UK students’ stories of pain, hope and empowerment. Featuring the voices of UK women and men and their experiences with sexual assault, relationship violence, and stalking, the presentation will compel the audience to make a personal commitment to safety for all members of the campus community. All new students are expected to attend one performance of “In Our Own Voices.”

Noon – 12:50 p.m. Letting the “Cat” Out of the Bag: Secrets to College Success

(211 Student Center) Here’s the inside scoop on how to make the jump from high school to college. This interactive session will equip students with the skills needed to be successful in college. Students get tips on how to improve concentration and avoid distractions from students who have been there and successfully navigated their way through UK. They will learn basic time-management techniques, how to manage stress, and how to prepare for exams.

1–1:50 p.m.; 2–2:50 p.m. You Heard It Here First:Tips from a Faculty Member

(Center Theater, StudentCenter) Dr. Alan DeSantis, the perennial pick for Best Professor in the annual Best of UK survey, will share his insider tips for success at UK.

2:30 – 3:30 p.m. Get-to-Know-You Gatherings

(StudentCenter) These informal gatherings offer students the opportunity to meet other students and families from their state or region of the country. This is also a great time to get questions answered by faculty, staff, administrators, K Crew, and UK Parent Advisory Council members.

4 – 4:45 p.m. New Student Induction Ceremony

(Memorial Coliseum) Students, family members, and guests are invited to join President Lee Todd and other members of the university community to commemorate the start of a new school year in the formal, traditional manner.

8 – 10 p.m. Big Blue U

(Commonwealth Stadium) Join the Big Blue Nation with a march across campus into Commonwealth Stadium. Students will run through the tunnel onto the field, see themselves on the big screens, learn UK cheers and songs, hear from UK coaches and student-athletes, get their class photo taken, and get their Traditions T. Everyone will be decked out in blue and white showing their Wildcat pride.

10 p.m. – 1 a.m. Campus Ruckus

(Haggin Field) Games, music, and food are highlights of this outdoor event, including the annual Great Pizza Taste-Off.

Noon – 12:50 p.m. Center for Community Outreach

(Center for Student Involvement, 1stFloorStudentCenter) The Center for Community Outreach offers numerous programs dedicated to various types of community service – working with children, the elderly, low-income individuals, hospitals, global non-profit organizations, and many more.

1 – 1:50 p.m. Campus Is Alive After 5

(Center for Student Involvement, 1stFloorStudentCenter) Students will explore the many involvement and leadership opportunities that await them on UK’s campus. UK is a big place but the Office of Student Involvement helps make it feel smaller.

3 – 3:50 p.m. Get Your Google On

(231 Student Center) Learn Web-research skills to search smarter, faster, and better.

3 – 3:50 p.m. Academic Success: A Fresh Start for Your Freshman Year

(230 Student Center) UK Ambassadors will cover the ins and outs of academic life at UK. Topics of discussion will include general class information, studying, tests, grades, papers, and academic resources. The differences between high school and UK will also be addressed.

6 – 7 p.m. Student Government/VIP Center

(Memorial Hall and Student Center Grand Ballroom) Student Government and the Violence Intervention and Prevention Center challenge the men and women of UK to think about how the issue of violence against women impacts student success on campus. Men will meet in the Student Center Grand Ballroom, and women will meet in Memorial Hall.

7 – 9 p.m. Picnic with Patsy and Student Involvement Fair

(MainBuilding, Front Lawn) Enjoy dinner with UK President and Mrs. Todd. After dinner, learn how to get involved with UK’s many student organizations. Getting involved is the best way to meet people, enhance your skills for the future, and make this large campus seem much smaller.

9 p.m. – 1 a.m. StudentCenter Spectacular

(StudentCenter) This exciting evening is one of the most anticipated events of K Week.Students can get an Old West picture taken, make their own music video, sit for a caricature artist, have their fortune told, compete in the Money Tree Game Show, play a round of Laser Tag, make a photo puzzle, see hypnotist Dale K, enjoy free food, and much more. Outside in the parking lot, students participate in Reality Check, simulated alcohol impairment activities, as well as getto know UK Police.

9:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. UK FUSION (UK For Unity and Service In Our Neighborhoods)

(Haggin Field) A thousand students, staff and faculty take part in one of the largest community service events in the state, volunteering 5,000 hours in a single day at dozens of agencies in FayetteCounty. For the new student, UK FUSION is a wonderful opportunity to meet new friends, make a difference in the community, and reaffirm UK’s commitment to service.

4 – 4:50 p.m. The Dos and Don’ts of the College Classroom

(230 Student Center) Students join UK faculty members from the Discovery Seminar Program to talk about how to create positive relationships with professors, what they expect of students, and how to do their very best right from the start.

5 – 5:50 p.m. Exploring the Unknown: Academic Experiences Outside the Classroom

(228 Student Center) Learning should not come to a halt when a student steps outside the classroom. Quite the contrary! The best approach to learning is having the opportunity to participate and gain hands-on experience — to learn by doing. Students are introduced to eUreKa! (Experiences in Undergraduate Research and Kreative Activities), the office that brings together the many extra-classroom scholarly opportunities for undergraduates.

9:30– 11 a.m. Living-Learning Community Induction Ceremony

(Worsham Theater, StudentCenter) The Office of Residence Life announces the first Living-Learning Community Induction Ceremony.All new Living-Learning Community students are expected to attend. The purpose of the ceremony is to recognize and encourage the commitment as well as strong dedication students have made toward their academic endeavors.

10 a.m. – 10:50 a.m. Don’t Blow Yourself Up: Surviving Chemistry

(228 Student Center) Students meet Dr. Kim Woodrum and learn key ways to succeed in chemistry. She will share tips for the best studying and test-taking practices.

4 – 8 p.m. WE ARE UK

(Behind Memorial Hall) WE ARE UK is a new event that celebrates the uniqueness of UK. This festival offers free food from Kentucky and from around the world with live performances ranging from hip hop to country, poetry to debate, and other random talents from UK students.

4 – 4:50 p.m. Hidden Secrets: The Best Study Spots on Campus

(Departs from Patterson statue outside of PattersonOfficeTower) Now that classes have started, students may be wondering where to hit the books. The student-led tour includes places to study between classes, late at night, or with a group of friends.

8 – 10 p.m. Worst-Case Scenario Survival Guide

(Memorial Hall) Join acclaimed speaker and bestselling author Jennifer Worick as she answers questions and hosts a frank discussion about surviving college, the basics to dating in adulthood, and the simple solutions to solving your own “worst case scenarios.” This showcase offers something for every co-ed, touching on defensive dating, first impressions, restaurant and club survival skills, bedroom (and dorm room) skills, and academic survival.

Sea of Blue

Students show everyone what kind of Wildcat they really are. Faculty, staff, and students will wear UK blue to show their Wildcat pride. The Prize Patrol will be looking for the most spirited fans and will be handing out awesome prizes.
