TITLE: LIVING ROOM (the title would be brailled in the final version)
Changes and reasoning
Windows and curtains / Simplify curtain pole and rings.
Keep window frame, as this is something a blind person would encounter in real life.
Remove car: not relevant to main idea of a living room; visual principle of transparency, and partial image/occlusion.
Cat and wool ball / Remove: not essential to main concept ie: Living room
Man / Remove: not essential to main concept ie. Living room.
Sofa / Simplify by removing 3D perspective ie. draw side view
Side table / Simplify by removing 3D perspective (edging and smaller rear legs) and confusing integration with skirting board. Keep top surface, as more identifiable than an edge. Standardise the length of the table legs.
Skirting board / Had difficulty deciding what to do with this, as it defines the change from floor to wall. However, it I included from a 3D perspective, and even if carefully included so that it didn’t run in to any of the other objects, it could be quite confusing hovering as it does in the in the middle of the picture. In the end I decided that, through practical experience, a blind person understands the difference between the floor and the wall, and that I would use my navigation description to establish which picture objects could be found on the wall and which were positioned on the floor.
Introduce new object:
TV and stand / In considering the purpose of the picture (perhaps to define the living room from other rooms in a house, through it’s furniture and use) I decided to include another commonly found living room object ie. a television and stand. There is a slight gap left between the TV and the cabinet stand, so that tactually they are more separately defined.
All floor situated objects / All objects are aligned along the ‘floor’ and were positioned according to a familiar order in a living room. Appropriate height relationships maintained.
Wall objects / The window no longer ‘runs’ into the sofa.
Textures / As the revised drawing was done by hand I had to imagine the differences in feeling between the different textures, however this would obviously have to be tested in the actual raised drawing.
