The imperfect tense is used to describe actions
that happened repeatedly in the past.
The imperfect tense is used to describe repeated/habitual actions in the past.
-Something that was happening, something that used to happen or something that happend a lot (more than once).

Uses of the imperfect tense
An action that use to happend, was happening, happened a lot.
The Imperfect Tense Describing a Situation
(The way it used to be)
In addition to saying what someone used to do, the imperfect tense is used
1. To describe people, places, and situations in the past.
La casa de mis abuelos era enomre.
Tenía cinco dormitorios.
2. To talk about a past action or situation when no beginning or end is specified
Había mucha gente en la casa para el aniversario de mis abuelos.
3. To describe the situation or background information when something else happened or interrupted the ongoing action. In these cases, the imperfect tense is used to tell what someone was doing when something else happened (preterite).
(Something was happening when something else occurred)
Todos mis parientes bailaban cuando llegamos.
All of my relatives were dancing when we arrived.
Reflexive verbs and Reciprocal actions
Reflexive verbs are verbs in which the subject is the direct recipient of the action of the verb. (self)
Ella se mira en el espejo.
Ella está mirándose en el espejo.
Ella se está miren el espejo.

Generally, we used to greet each other with a hug.
Nos dábamos la mano.
We used to shake hands.
They used to speak to each other every day.

The Imperfect Tense and other uses
The imperfect tense may also be used to tell what time it was or what the weather was like when something happened.
Eran las cinco de la mañana y llovía mucho cuando el accidente occurió.
To describe the physical, mental, and emotional state of a person or thing when something happend.
Muchas personas querían ayudar a la familia, pero no sabían qué hacer.
These verbs are often used in the imperfect to describe state of being:

Tener
Había and hubo are forms of haber and both means there was or there were. Había is used to describe a situation that existed in the past, while hubo is used to say that an even took place.
Había mucho humo en el apartamento.
Hubo un terremoto ayer a las seis de la mañana.
