Two more HSV on the road

Education Queensland has two more Healthy Schools Vans on the road.Tracey Hayles (SEO) and Deanne McMullan (Community Nutritionist) are based at StaffordStateSchool in North Brisbane.Lynette Adams (SEO) and Achamma Joseph (Community Nutritionist) are based at the Indigenous Learning Centre in Townsville. This completes the HSV state wide staffing and we look forward to working with an expanded team in 2006.

What is in store for 2006?

This year we will be expanding our program in the Logan Albert Beaudesert District and establishing a presence in the Gold Coast District.

Once again, we will be offering workshops, forums and information sessions for teachers, school executive, parents, tuckshop convenors and other school community members.

We will be establishing a variety of networks across both districts and will continue to work with other government and non-government agencies to support schools in the areas of physical activity and nutrition.

Smart Choices Toolkit

The Smart Choices Toolkit, which was due to be released into schools in February, has been delayed. It is anticipated that this document will be released in hard copy sometime in March. However, it will be available from the Education Queensland website prior to hardcopy release – check for up-dates.

WindarooValleySHS Tuckshop

“Having removed soft drinks from the school tuckshop over the Christmas beak, only one student asked for it, and when told that it was no longer being sold, he simply chose an alternative with no fuss at all!”

WindarooValley SHS Tuckshop Convenor

This is a tribute to the staff at WVSHS who prepared students in 2005 for the changes in 2006 – Congratulations!

Policy Development Workshops

Two policy development workshops have been conducted at the HSV Centre in Barry Streetin response to perceived needs in our schools.

The first workshop focussed on developing a whole school approach to student health and wellbeing. This was a highly successful day due to the hard work and enthusiasm of the participants. A follow-up session is planned for later this term to consolidate policies and to share experiences.

The second workshop was directed at tuckshop convenors, P&C members and school executive.Once again this was a very productive activity and participants left with the basis of a tuckshop policy and the tools to continue development once back in the school setting.

Many thanks to Kym Kirk, Community Participation Officer, for his support and valued in-put.

A Tuckshop Procedure Manual Workshop will be held on the 7th March 2006. More information will be available soon.

School Snapshot

Woodridge SS

Classes at Woodridge SS are trialling a healthy eating campaign where students are encouraging other students to bring healthy lunches to school.

Through self monitoring and class reporting, every fortnight one class is the winner of a platter of chopped fruit and veg. This class then reports to the school assemblyabout how they achieved their award.

The first winning class reported that no one had brought in chips for their morning break snack that week.

Congratulations to Woodridge on a great initiative!
