Food and Craft Market in Peterborough

Arts organisation Metal is planning a large scale, weekend-long Harvest Festival in Peterborough’s historic Cathedral Square. The festival will celebrate the relationship between the city and its rural countryside, connecting people to the land and its associated Harvest rituals and promoting local food and suppliers. At its centre will be a dinner for 500 people curated by international artists Lucy and Jorge Orta – the 1st one in the UK - and a ritual procession of local bakers, gardeners, farmers, dancers, and musicians. The weekend will see the reinstatement of the traditional market that ran in the Square from the 12th century through to the 1960s. One hundred Morris and cultural dancers, teams of folk musicians and 10 UK visual and performing artists willengage the public across the city centre. A mass public ceilidh will take place on the Saturday evening before the Guildhall is turned into a kitchen ready to prepare for the dinner on the Sunday. This will be a publicly engaging weekend of art and culture that reinvigorates and transforms the ancestral ritual of Harvest and attracts thousands of people into the city centre. It launches an 18 month programme of public events, publications and exhibition based on the theme of Harvest.

Food and Craft Market

The food and craft market will take place on both the 19th and 20th of September and will be located in St John's Square in Peterborough City Centre. We are seeking traders who are able to showcase the best in high quality local food and crafts. Traditional market stalls will be provided for all traders. Stalls will be selected based on how closely the produce and/or products complement the themes of the weekend of local food, traditional crafts and local agricultural heritage.

About the Organisers - Metal

Metal is an arts organisation founded in London in 2002 by Jude Kelly OBE. Jude played an instrumental role in securing the 2012 Olympic Games for London and is currently chair of the board and artistic director at London Southbank Centre. Joining her on Metal’s board is actor Sir Ian McKellen, writers Paul Morley, YasminAlibhai Brown and Rachel Lichtenstein, Radio One DJ NihalArthanayake, artistic director of Liverpool Biennial Sally Tallant and creative directors, Ian Thompson and Mark Blenkinsop. Metal now has bases in Liverpool, Southend-on-Sea and Peterborough.

Metal’s Peterborough home is Chauffeurs Cottage, the original gatehouse property at the entrance to the impressive Peterborough Cathedral. Metal curates an exciting programme of international and UK artists in residence and run a wide range of events, exhibitions and participatory projects that connect artists to audiences and audiences to artists.

Harvest Food and Craft Market – Guidance

Aims

Our food and craft market is intended to recreate the buzzing and vibrant markets that were held in Peterborough city centre for hundreds of years. We are looking to develop a market that showcases high quality crafts and locally produced hot and cold food from a wide range of farmers, producers, craftspeople and artists.

Market Site and Trading Hours

The market will be held in historic St John's Square, Peterborough, PE1 1XB. Trading hours are from 10am – 5pm on Saturday, and 10.30am – 4.30pm on Sunday.

Trading Conditions

  • Traditional market stalls will be provided for all traders, a single stall consists of a table area of 7ft x 3ft and a roof area of 7ft x 7ft giving 2ft overhang at the back and front of the stall. Stall holders should bring their own chairs if required
  • There is limited power availability on site. Any stalls requiring power will need to indicate this on the application form.
  • Traders must bring their own extension cables, including one at least 5m in length.
  • Vehicles will not be permitted on site between 9am and 5.30pm on the Saturday and 9.30am and 4.30pm on the Sunday. Vehicles must be off site on both days by 7pm.
  • Stallholders are required to occupy their pitch by 9am on Saturday and 9.30am on Sunday.
  • Metal will endeavor to maintain a varied selection of suitable products on the market, and where necessary may limit the sale of certain products to avoid excessive duplication.
  • Traders are not permitted to erect any additional stands, tables or gazebos.
  • Stalls will be pre-allocated and you will be given a map in advance of the day identifying where your pitch is.
  • Parking is not available anywhere on site. There are a variety of places to park nearby, however please be aware of height restrictions. If you are travelling in a smaller vehicle/car and looking for convenience, we suggest Queensgate ( If you’re travelling in a larger vehicle/van, although slightly further away, Wirrina car park is very reasonable, costing only £3 for 24 hours. ( If none of the above are viable, please make this known to us and we will do our best to accommodate you.

Pitch Fees and Concessions

  • Pitches are charged at £50 for traders and £75 for caterers. This covers both Saturday and Sunday.Preference will be given to stall holders trading for the full weekend, however in some circumstances we will accept stalls trading for either the Saturday or the Sunday, the charge for this will be £30 a day for traders and £50 for caterers.
  • Your pitch reservation will be confirmed on receipt of your pitch fee and supporting documentation.
  • Stall holders are able to book a maximum of 2 pitches if a larger pitch is required.
  • In case of cancellations we will endeavour to find a suitable replacement stall, however in the event that we can't we may be unable to refund your pitch fee.Stall holders who cancel within five working days of the event will be charged a rental fee for the weekend unless there are extenuating circumstances.
  • Should unforeseen circumstances cause Harvest be cancelled, all pitch fees will be returned.
  • We do not want finance to be a barrier to attending for smaller producers and a total of 8 concessionary places will be available to stall holders who are a very small business, a charity or a community group. The same standards of produce and presentation will still be required for these concessionary stalls. Stalls

  • We aim to champion local producers and so encourage food and craft stalls to source their materials primarily from within the local area.
  • Product information must meet legal labeling requirements, with clearly written information on ingredients and production methods ideally available in addition to this.
  • All stalls must comply with current Environmental Health and Trading Standards legislation, and must display business details and address. Where relevant, a copy of your food hygiene certificate must be submitted as supporting documentation with your pitch fee.
  • All stall holders must have current public and products liability insurance and where relevant employee liability insurance.Details of these must be submitted with your pitch fee.
  • Goods, equipment and produce and not to be left on site overnight. Metal will not be held responsible for any injury, loss or liability arising out of the storage, display and /or sale of stock and/or equipment during or after trading hours.
  • Stalls should be kept clean and tidy with packaging kept to a minimum.
  • All rubbish must be disposed of at the end of the market using the specially allocated bins. No rubbish may be put in public litter bins.
  • All stallholders should comply with safety requirements and best practice, ensuring the proper and safe display of goods and produce.
  • Sale of alcohol is restricted to sale for retail only, and not for immediate consumption. Traders wishing to sell alcohol must hold the relevant licence to do so, and forward a copy of this to Metal with your supporting documents.
