1 minute / Yesterday we …Today we are going to continue our work with small moment stories and we are going to learn even more ways to make our stories better.
Explicit Instruction
5-10 minutes / Boys and girls, I have a story to share with you. Last night after I finished dinner with my family I decided to take out and read some of your terrific stories. So I went to my backpack, took out your stories, and sat down in my comfy reclining chair and began to read your writing.Teacher reenacts his/her reading of student work by pointing to a blank booklet.
Me and my friend played the game Candyland.
Me nd mi fend payd the gam kandeld.
This story was really interested and I couldn’t wait to read how the game went! Teacher turns the page of the booklet and reads the next page.
I was red and my friend was green.
I wz red and mi fend wz geen.
Teacher turns to the final page and begins reading but stops with a confused look.
I was winning but then …?
I wz winin but ten gtosnt bkdwn.
Oh no! I’m not sure what happened next. I know that they were playing Candyland and that one friend was red and the other was green and it sounds like the game may almost be done but I’m not sure how the story ended. I’m left hanging! This is a great story but unfortunately I cannot read the ending. It made me really sad because I was really enjoying it. Boys and girls I want you to know that it can be sad when you’re not able to read a story. This is true if it’s your own piece of writing or someone else’s.
Guided Practice
3-5 minutes / Turn and talk to a friend about what made the ending of this story so difficult to read. What was it about the writing that made it difficult to read?
Send Off for Independent Reading / During independent writing today, I want you to try really hard to make sure that your story has what it needs for someone to read it from beginning to end. You want to make sure that you can read your story and others can as well.
Group Share
5 minutes / Invite a student to share their story with you and begin reading it aloud to the class.
