21 / FORECASTS BY EXPERTS FROM THE INTERNATIONAL tourist industry indicate that China is a vast and untapped travel market, ready to receive the world.
It is estimated that by 2008, around 80 million Chinese will travel by airplane.
VARIG is prepared to attract a significant portion of this market. In the second half of August, it will begin regular flights between Brazil and China. Four weekly flights will cover Rio-São Paulo-Munich-Beijing.
To this end, VARIG and Air China signed Memorandum of intent, last May 24, in Beijing, creating a joint venture that will be responsible for implementing these flights, all of which will be made by VARIG Boeing 777s.
Brazil offers a wide range of natural attractions that are certain to please the Chinese. Among them are the verdant Pantanal, the exotic AmazonRain Forest, the historic and archeological sites around the nation, and a wealth of folklore.
Intense business activity is expected between the two countries, simultaneously with leisure tourism, as an immediate result of the visit made by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and his retinue to China. VARIG believes that, at first, around 200,000 passengers will be carried between the two countries every year, plus a significant cargo tonnage.
VARIG was directly involved in the trip by the President and his delegation by carrying scores of Brazilian business people in one of its Boeing 777s. The trip was one more landmark in the history of VARIG, which was the first South American airline to land in Beijing and Shangai. And it will also be the first to fly regularly to China.
