Dear Parent

Parent evening follow-up homework, assessment awareness meeting, half term maths homework and dates

Parent evening follow-up homework

At this week’s parent evening meetings, several Year 6 parents requested a follow up Year 6 SATs reading paper for the children to have extra practice to do at home. If it has not yet arrived home, please pop in to pick up one from Oak (or check the bottom of your child’s bag!). Please do help/discuss the paper with your child and hand it in whenever you finish it: no set date for handing in.

Assessment evening

On Wed 8th Nov at 7pm, there will be an assessment awareness meeting in Oak classroom. It is most important for Year 6 parents to be aware of this year’s expectations on their children but I think it would also be of interest to Year 5 parents to know what lies in store! We will discuss SATs but also the ongoing assessment expectations – in particular the writing assessments. I envisage the meeting will last between 45minutes to an hour.

Half term maths homework

This week sees the 1st of the more structured maths homework tasks. (No spelling this week – just maths.) In a test situation the children would have 30 minutes to complete this kind of ‘arithmetic’ paper, but there is no need for the children to do this homework in a set time: it is fine if they take as long as they need and if they receive help from someone at home. Please encourage them to show working – use an additional sheet of paper if they need more room. You will notice that the old Bronze/Silver/Gold (guidance on how difficult I expect the children to find the work) has been replaced by ‘Hop, skip and jump’. I would expect all of Oak to do HOP (questions 1 – 15). Some children will not have covered the maths necessary to complete SKIP (16 – 25) and will certainly find JUMP (26 – 35) a challenge. However, please encourage them to have-a-go at everything and feel free to help/explain/recap as appropriate.

Finally, some forthcoming dates

·  Thurs 2nd Nov – Oak visit the Roman baths (thanks to Mrs Cryer and Mrs Williams for offering to come as our adult helpers) Because this falls on a Thursday, Mr Hackett has kindly offered to do Oak’s piano and drumming lessons on Friday 3rd Nov.

·  Wed 8th Nov – Oak assessment awareness meeting (7pm)

·  Fri 10th Nov – Oak cake sale (after star of the week)

·  Thurs 30th Nov – Oak Advent Church Day

·  Wed 13th Dec – Beech and Oak ‘Carols by Candlelight’ (7pm)

Please pop into Oak is you need further details on any of the above.

Best wishes

Jo Smith
