B. RATIONALE FOR FLAG DESIGNATION

Writing Flag

1.  Criteria:

1)  Minimum of 20 pages or 5000 words total, including:

a.  Minimum of 8 pages of formal writing (formal essays, research papers, literature reviews, research proposals, position papers, lab reports, etc., as determined by the discipline)

b.  Informal writing required (pre-writing, outlining, drafts, journals, one-minute papers, essay tests, reflection papers, in-class responses, reaction papers, etc., as determined by the discipline)

2)  Minimum of 3 writing assignments (variety of assignments common to discipline)

3)  Requires at least 35% of final course grade

4)  Process feedback required:

a.  Provide a description of the writing process that will be expected for formal assignments, such as: “students will be given time in class to plan,” “all drafts and planning should be submitted with the final copy,” or a statement on what is expected about revision. Note: not all assignments have to be process driven.

b.  Provide a description of the feedback plan, such as: peer review, written feedback on drafts, or conferencing. Note: feedback is intended to prepare students for upcoming drafts or assignments, so making the connection clear among the assignment, feedback, and upcoming assignment is valuable. Because of this, written feedback on a final draft will not constitute feedback.

5)  Include statements in the syllabus for the following writing flag expectations:

a.  Provide the “W credit” statement: “Students must complete their Essential Proficiency Writing requirements before they can receive credit for a Flagged Writing class. Students may receive writing credit for no more than one Writing Flag in any one semester.”

b.  Provide a statement that addresses the “Focus on Writing” element of the course. The value of writing as it relates to the discipline should be clearly stated in the syllabus and the value of writing assignments should be made clear. Class discussions should also support the value of writing.

c.  Provide a description of how written work will be holistically graded, meaning that both the quality of writing as well as the assignment content should inform the grade.

d.  If requiring research writing, discuss how students’ efforts at responsible information literacy practices and appropriate documentation will be supported. Reference the Skills Handbook where appropriate.

e.  Discuss how the Skills Handbook will be used to support students’ writing.
