Five new ENGEL injection molding machines for increased capacity and capability

A major investment in growth and innovation by National Door Industries

York / PA – November 15, 2016

National Door Industries, the world’s largest manufacturer and distributor of garage door related products, has expanded their manufacturing facilities, added capabilities and increased efficiencies with a capital expenditure of over 4 million dollars. The recent expansion and revitalization have enabled them to keep up with increased demand and provide customers with state-of-the-art component parts.

Over the first six months of 2016, National Door Industries has undergone a major revitalization of their 150,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Fort Worth, Texas, including the installation of five ENGEL injection molding machines, ranging from 400 to 1000 US tons, to provide additional capacity and capability for their growing business.

No stranger to growth

Bob Barnard started into business with a partner in 1968 under the name Joba Inc., importing and distributing glass in Fort Worth, Texas. Two years later he took over the company and began manufacturing and distributing decorative garage door window trim. Over the next twenty years, and through several name changes, Bob grew the company from one employee in a 2,000 sq. ft. facility to 38 employees in a 69,000 sq. ft. facility, with new innovations and capabilities including the stick building and welding of plastic window frames for the garage door industry as well as expanding the importing and distribution of garage door components.

The company continued to expand its product lines, grow its business, and ultimately changed its name in 1989 to National Door Industries. The business, now owned by Bob’s sons Mike and Britt Barnard, manufactures and distributes out of a 150,000 sq. ft. facility with 87 employees, manufacturing over 33,000 SKU’s of different window and insert trim products – as well as stocking and distributing a total of 70,000 parts including fasteners and other hardware components for the industry. The company services over 30 garage door manufacturers and 7,500 dealers in North and South America, and around the globe.

“You can’t sell out of an empty wagon,” company founder Bob Barnard would say, “so we are committed to keeping our wagon full.”

And full their wagon is.

Investing for the future

An industry leader in developing new components to withstand the varying climate conditions of a global customer base – these technologies have brought an increase in business and required further expansion. At times of peak product demand, brothers Mike and Britt were hard pressed to find capable partners to outsource manufacturing to. No one could meet the quality standards that they demand – and their customers expect. And with double digit growth over the past two years, they were struggling to keep up with production. So the decision was made that -- to not only keep up but to continue growing the business -- their current facility required revitalization with additional equipment and capabilities. And so the work began.

The first change was the reconfiguration of warehouse storage facilities to enable an increase to the manufacturing floor space. Then an automated paint line was added, as well as CNC milling and dispensing, multi-spindle drilling machines, a chilled water distribution system, and additional molding equipment.

Over a six month period, five ENGEL injection molding machines ranging from 400 to 1000 US tons were added, as well as an ENGEL viper robot. The new equipment -- as well as the company’s existing ENGEL machines – is utilized to produce window frames as well as designer Stylecraft™ and Styleline™ window inserts for garage doors.

With the added capacities the new ENGEL equipment brings National Door, they plan to continue expanding their current product lines, as there is a great opportunity in their industry, but also venture into custom molding.

Leading innovation

National Door Industries continues to choose ENGEL as their partner for several reasons. “We are both family owned companies,” shares Britt Barnard, partner / owner of National Door Industries. “With reputations for high quality, reliable products and a corporate focus on growth and innovation, our companies have a shared philosophy.”

The ENGEL machines support the goals of National Door by providing faster cycle times and higher part quality -- allowing them to decrease lead times to their customers – while saving costs with less waste and lower energy consumption.

Another family owned company which shares the same core values, and worked closely on this project, is ENGEL area sales representative ADAMS Engineers and Equipment Inc. Technical Sales Engineer Don Gruber worked closely with personnel from both ENGEL and National Door to specify not only the ENGEL machinery, but also the auxiliary equipment.

Cliff Adams, President of ADAMS Engineers commented “National Door has made a significant investment in technology to grow their business for the future. We appreciate their confidence in ENGEL, Don, and ADAMS Engineers. Both ENGEL and ADAMS are here to support them with training and technical expertise as they continue to develop and expand their business.”

The future

“Looking to the future, we anticipate additional major capital improvements to further advance our reputation as the leader and innovative manufacturer for our industry.” says company partner / owner Mike Barnard. “We are also looking to diversify into other growth industries that will benefit from our core competencies and high quality production, and will look to ENGEL to support us down that path.”

A family owned business, National Door Industries currently has 87 employees, many having been with the company for over 20 years – some as long as 40 years.

The revitalization of the National Door facility in Fort Worth, Texas, with a capital expenditure of over 4 million dollars, has expanded their manufacturing facilities, added capabilities and increased efficiencies.

Five ENGEL injection molding machines ranging from 400 to 1000 US tons, as well as an ENGEL viper robot, were added to the expanded manufacturing facility.
