Study Goals

·  Ability to pronounce all words in exercises on pp. 37-39 (PE).

·  Ability to write in Pashto Script from the transcription and vice versa.

·  Ability to write vowels by letters and diacritics in Pashto.

·  Ability to recognize and pronounce retroflex consonants in Pashto.

·  Understanding of “false diphthongs” and the ability to pronounce them in Pashto.

·  Ability to reproduce all new sounds from Lesson 2: “Grammar Focus” and “Grammar Note”.

Assignments for Independent Study

Grammar Focus, pp. 37-39, (PE)

·  Read pp. 37-39 and complete all exercise on pp. 37-39. Practice pronunciation of words. Pay particular attention to exercise 14 on p. 37 and exercises 16 and 18 on pp. 38-39.

Grammar Note, pp. 40-48, (PE)

·  Read pp. 40-48. Complete all listening activities with the accompanying CD-ROM on vowels, diacritics, consonants, and retroflex consonants. Practice these sounds everyday by choosing words that emphasize these different grammatical points. Pay particular attention to exercise 33 on p. 44 on retroflex consonants. Make flashcards of the words included in A. and B. on pp.44-47. Bring these cards with you and go through them each day, a few times a day, to practice their pronunciation. Try doing this with your other flashcards for pronunciation, the alphabet, and the Pashto script until you are very comfortable with them. Go through your vocabulary cards from the previous chapter as well + all basic greetings and phrases you have learned so far for review. Are you having some difficulty? Take note of some of your difficulties to present to your partner during your tutorial.

·  HAND IN: Write out exercises 19 and 20 on pp. 40-41 (PE).

·  Read about diphthongs on p. 48 and complete all listening activities with the CD-ROM on p. 48.

Learning the Pashto Script, pp. 52-55, (PS)

·  Complete exercises A, B, and C in “The Order of Writing Words” on writing words connected together, words not connected together, and some letters that aren’t connected to other letters, pp. 52-55.

·  HAND IN: Write out each word for each exercise in A, B, and C to hand in at your tutorial on a separate sheet of paper.

Basic Expressions and Phrases

·  CR, Download the document, “Expressing Nationality and the Location of Home” and listen to the accompanying audio file. Practice these phrases based on what you know from learning about Pashto’s pronunciation.

·  HAND IN: Write a short dialogue using some expressions from “Expressing Nationality and the Location of Home” and other basic greetings and expressions that you are familiar with. The dialogue should be between two students talking about who they are, where they are from, etc.

Assignments for Independent Study

·  HAND IN: Write out exercises 19 and 20 on pp. 40-41 (PE).

·  HAND IN: Write out each word for each exercise in A, B, and C to hand in at your tutorial on a separate sheet of paper

·  HAND IN: Write a short dialogue using some expressions from “Expressing Nationality and the Location of Home” and other basic greetings and expressions that you are familiar with. The dialogue should be between two students talking about who they are, where they are from, etc.

Conversation Session Preparation

·  Be prepared to complete exercise 17 on p. 39 (PE).

·  Be prepared to complete exercise 24 on p. 42 (PE).

·  Be prepared to complete exercise 34 on p. 47 (PE).

·  Be prepared to be drilled on various pronunciations, letter combinations, vowel sounds, false diphthongs and retroflex consonant sounds.

·  Be prepared to reenact a dialogue similar to the one you prepared for this week’s assignments.

Self Assessment
