Study Goals

  • Memorization of classroom vocabulary.
  • Understanding and ability to use the verb “to be” in Pashto.
  • Ability to use personal (subject) and possessive pronouns.
  • Review of all vocabulary from Lessons 1, 2, and 3 in PE.
  • Review of writing the Pashto script.
  • Review of all grammar structures learned this semester.
  • Ability to ask for directions.
  • Review of all basic greetings and expressions from PE and the CR handouts.

Assignments for Independent Study

Getting Started, pp. 90-94, (PE)

  • Read pp. 90-94. Study and memorize the vocabulary in Exericse 1 and listen to the accompanying audio on the CR-ROM. Complete all exericses on pp. 90-94.
  • Practice the question and answer model on p. 91 in exercise 3.
  • HAND IN: Write out exercise 8, p. 93 in PE.
  • HAND IN: Write out exercise 9, p. 93 in PE.
  • HAND IN: Write out exercise 10, p. 93 in PE.

Language Focus, pp. 95-99, (PE)

  • Personal and Possessive Pronouns, pp. 95-96: Read about Personal (Subject) and Possessive Pronouns on pp. 95-96. Write out, study, and memorize the chart on p. 95. Practice pronouncing the pronouns and using them in simple phrases or expressions. Think back to different expressions that you have memorized and use. Do any of those expressions use any of these pronouns?
  • HAND IN: Write out exercise 13 p. 96, PE.
  • Conjugation of the verb ‘to be’, p.96-98: Read about the conjugation of the verb ‘to be’ in the present tense on pp. 96-98. Write out, study, and memorize the charts on pp. 96-98. Are you able to use the appropriate conjugation with the correct personal pronoun? Practice saying simple sentences using the adjectives “strong,” “sad,” and “glad” like on p. 97, exercise 14.
  • Complete all activities on pp.97-99.
  • HAND IN: Write out exercise 17 p. 99 in PE.
  • HAND IN: Write out 5 complete sentences. In each sentence use a different personal pronoun and the appropriate conjugatin of the verb ‘to be.’

Asking Directions and Basic Expressions Review

  • Download and listen to the document “Spoken Pashto Resources: Asking for Directions” on CR. Study, memorize and practice using these words and phrases until you can do so with little difficulty.
  • HAND IN: Write a dialogue between a lost foreign exchange student from Afghanistan and a Five College student on campus. The two students meet and introduce each other. The foreign exchange student asks where certain buildings on campus and off campus are. Each speaker should have at least 7 or more lines.
  • HAND IN: Write a dialogue between an elderly person and a younger person. Be sure to use appropriate address and formalities.

Review

  • Review all greetings, expressions, and vocabulary form the Course Reserves online.
  • Review the alphabet, letter/word pronunciation, intonation, and stress.
  • Review all grammar structures covered in Lessons 1, 2 and 3 of PE.
  • Review the basics on writing the Pashto script, joining letters, letter combinations and forms etc.
  • Review all topics covered this semester in the textbook and in the script’s workbook.
  • Be sure to review exercises and practice all topics covered.
  • Be sure to have completed all exercises in Lessons 1, 2, and 3 + exercises from “Getting Started” and “Language Focus” (pp.96-99) in Lesson 4.

Learning the Pashto Script, pp. 80-82, (PS)

  • Practice writing the texts on pp. 80-82.
  • HAND IN: Write out the 3 different texts on pp. 80-82 to hand in at your tutorial.

Homework and Preparation for Tutorial

  • HAND IN: Write out exercise 8, p. 93 in PE.
  • HAND IN: Write out exercise 9, p. 93 in PE.
  • HAND IN: Write out exercise 10, p. 93 in PE.
  • HAND IN: Write out exercise 13 p. 96, PE.
  • HAND IN: Write out exercise 17 p. 99 in PE.
  • HAND IN: Write out 5 complete sentences. In each sentence use a different personal pronoun and the appropriate conjugatin of the verb ‘to be.’

  • Be prepared to reenact the dialogues you prepared.
  • Be prepared to orally review all basic greetings, expressions, phrases, vocabulary and grammar structures.
  • Be prepared to orally review the alphabet, the Pashto script, and pronuncation (intonation, stress, tone etc).

Self Assessment
