Fishing Competitions 2018

The new season of fishing competitions is open with the Heaviest Fish & Species Hunt commencing on 1st March. The format for our competitions will remain largely unchanged from last season and hopefully we will once more be in a position to present an award in each category.
Entries for competitions can be submitted to or via this new Power Section Facebook page. Please ensure the date of capture and photographs are included. The more photos the better. The Facebook page is a new element for us this season so something of an experiment but I will hopefully be posting regular updates and fishing news.
All members, including juniors & ladies are eligible for all trophies
All competitions require that boats be launched and returned from the Boat club or moorings within the estuary.
The competitions available are as follows.

Heaviest Fish (1st March 2108 to 30th September 2018)

Trophy awarded to the heaviest fish caught, excluding pelagic sharks & Tope. Ensure you can weigh the fish. I have several small scales that I use for weighing but one of the types is a small digital luggage scale that cost less than a fiver. I will be bringing a few scales to the BBQ on the 7th April for those that wish to check out different types. Next time you visit IKEA pick up one of their blue shopping bags for 50p. They make ideal weighing slings and can support a decent weight.

Most Species (1st March 2018 to 30th September 2018)

Trophy awarded to the captor of the most species throughout the season. All fish count, no size limit. A clear photograph of the fish needs to be submitted. If you are unsure of the species take a few pictures from various angles, including the underside. Close ups can be helpful, particularly around the head and gill areas. This is an individual competition so if there are more than one individual fishing on a boat (including juniors) then each has to count their species separately.

Shark & Tope Trophy (1st April 2018 to 30th September 2018)
Pelagic Sharks and Tope. Heaviest fish (use shark measuring formula to establish weight) Fish must be measured and not weighed
Length of fish in inches (From tip of nose to the fork in the tail) x Girth (Around the body of the fish at widest part) x Girth divided by 800. This will give a good approximation of weight in pounds (approx within 3% accuracy). If you intend fishing for sharks or Tope you should ensure you are carrying a decent 'tailors' style measuring tape or similar flexible tape. All fish must be returned alive. If there is any confusion regarding measurement just record the length and girth in inches and I will do the calculation.

Bass Trophy (1st April to 30th September)

Trophy awarded for longest fish. Photograph of fish alongside tape or measure will be required. No size limit. ALL FISH MUST BE RETURNED THIS YEAR. NO BASS ALLOWED TO BE LANDED. We continue to use the length to establish best fish as it is quicker than weighing and therefore improves the chances of survival.

Mackerel Competition Saturday 4th August

One tide competition. Trophy awarded to skipper or nominated crew member of boat bringing the heaviest mackerel to the scales.
