The OilRag

Newsletter of the Pakenham Auto Club

June 2012

Firstly, apologies for not getting an OilRag out last month.

Just so you know the Committee hasn’t been sitting around doing nothing (not all of the time, anyway) we have reviewed several areas of the Clubs activities:

  • Club Membership Fees
  • Club Activity and Championship awards and Points System
  • Club Event Entry Fees

Our aim is to make this sort of information as accessible to members as possible so these (and others) will be reviewed and ratified by the Committee on an annual basis and posted on the website. Details of the policies are below.

John Carney has organised the August General Meeting at Pedders.

Details will be in the next OilRag and on the website soon.

The Grounds at Mcgregor Rd are too wet to use and will be out of action for the next couple of months. At this stage our next event is scheduled for 30 September.

We have also decided to try somethingdifferent and run a Khanacross on Cup Day (6th Nov). For all of us that aren’t interested in horses it’s a good opportunity to have day out. But be warned, you may have to dress as a jockey to compete- or a horse.

UPCOMING SOCIAL WEEKEND

On the weekend of the 15th and 16th September, the Cranksters Rod Kustom Club is holding a carnival at Nagambie (See the pdf below for details). This presents a good excuse for us to have one of our very casual and social road trips.

The itinerary for Saturday 15th is:

Meet in Pakenham for coffee about 9.30am and leave around 10.00am and head for Yea via Healsville for lunch. (With perhaps a break or 2 if anyone wants). 1.00pm leave Yea and travel to Rushworth via Seymour and Heathcote for an afternoon coffee stop. Approx 3.30pm (coffee breaks tend to drag on a bit). Travel to Whroo about 10mins Sth of Rushworth. Where we will spend some time looking over the old gold mining town or perhaps just looking for a nugget or two the old prospectors might have missed.

From there we will travel on to Shepparton. This is where we can settle into our accommodation and find someone to feed us an evening meal.

That all means we will have travelled about 300kms after leaving Pakenham, seen some interesting scenery along the way and probably consumed at least 3 cups of coffee and too many creamed bakery products.

The itinerary for Sunday 16th will be decided by the group over the course of Saturday evening but will probably include the Rod Show which stars at 10.00am.

So if a weekend away with some of your fellow members (and non members) appeals to you then book your accommodation in Shepparton as soon as possible.

All accomodation is booked out in Nagambi so we will end up in Shepparton for Saturday night. John and I have booked in at the Goulburn Valley Motor Village and urge anyone interested in doing the same to book asap as there is a bike event that weekend also.

Meet us in Pakenham before 10.00am or Yea before 1.00pm.

For more info or you just want to let me know you’re coming, then give me a call at home on 56254049.

Regards

Glenys

Club Event Entry Fees

APPROVED BY COMMITTEE: 21 May 2011

EFFECTIVE FROM: 1 JULY 2012

The Committee has reviewed the Entry fees charged for PAC events. A key consideration is a desire to encourage Junior members to compete. With that in mind, Committee has adopted a flat fee of $10 for Junior entry into all PAC run Motorkhanas and Khanacrosses.

The Committee also considered the use of McGregor Rd by other Clubs. All Clubs running an event utilising PAC Grounds will be responsible for ALL costs associated with running the event (CAMS fees etc) and will pay PAC a “ Grounds Maintenance Fee” so we can recover the costs associated with maintaining our Grounds and equipment.

Other Clubs will be notified of this decision shortly.

Entry Fees for PAC Events:

The following entry fees are to be charged for all PAC run events:

PAC Entry Fees
Senior (S) / Junior (J)
Entry (E) / Late (L) / Entry (E) / Late (L)

RX7 - The Best Car in the World

My name is John. I have three grandsons who call me GrandPa and three sons who just call me Dad.

I got a job a few months ago. Got elected to the Committee by some people I hardly know. First night on the job and I find, including myself, there are three Johns- I’m a bit confused- this could be hard. One of the Johns we just call “Hilly”. You all know him- a legendary bloke. That just leaves one more John, and you all know him. He’s the one that dreamt up that “Junior Development Program” stuff. He calls me “Whitey” and I don’t mind.

Anyway, let me explain about my car. I’ve worked most of my life fixing cars and I was often asked, “whats the best car in the world?” After thinking for a while, I had to admit that I didn’t know.

I was listening to a young bloke talking about his car one day. He said it was all paid for and he couldn’t be happier with his car. He then said “I reckon it’s the best car in the world”. I didn’t catch what brand it was but that doesn’t matter.

Now I know the answer to the question:

If you can afford it, if you are happy with it, the “best car in the world” is probably the one your driving right now.

Event Results

NGK Spark Plugs VMC Round 4

Round 4 of the NGK Spark Plugs VMC was run by PCC on Sunday 17 June. The event was originally slated for McGregor Rd but with that out of the question it was run in the carpark at the Cardinia Shire Offices in Pakenham. Thanks must go to Ray, Nick and Glad for organising the venue and to the Council for allowing the event to use their carpark.

To say the least, it was tight. Tests had to be modified and a couple of new ones were approved by the Motorkhana Panel to fit into the confined space but they all seemed to work well and purely from a spectator/ marshal’s point of view were pretty entertaining.

Inevitably it rained, making the last couple of tests interesting (and sending the open cars home) but I would have to say it was a good event.

Rear View Mirror

1982

The editor was bragging about the fact that we had 32 members, the highest it had been in five years. The most notable event on the calendar was the 10yh anniversary dance to be held on 5th June.

1992

The strongest department in the club during this period seems to have been “social” in spite of (or because of?) the position of social director being vacant.

In consecutive months we had Dave Wheatherhead organize a day at the Thunderdome, Mick Kelly, a day at the Science museum and Ambrose Byrne organized a very memorable outing down at the GMH proving grounds at Lang Lang.

2002

The membership secretary reported on 15 new members, only one of which (Tim Stuch) that I recognize as still being a current member. So can we conclude over a ten year period we lose 93% of new members

Club Meetings:

/

Sunday Coffee:

Don’t forget the Club General Meetings, held on the first Monday of each month in the Community Room at the Living & Learning Centre, Pakenham—6B Henry St (entry is on the right hand side of the building).
We are always looking for suggestions on how to make these more relevant to members (guest speakers, visits to businesses etc.) or further information on (or to offer suggestions for) meeting activities contact PAC Meeting Co-ordinator / Some of our members gather for an informal meeting on Sunday mornings at Lakeside Pakenham—approx. 8:00 am. This is a good chance to take your club permitted car for a run.
